Broadcast scholarship named in honor of Eric Nadel
An anonymous donor has established a broadcast journalism scholarship named in honor of Texas Rangers Hall of Fame radio voice Eric Nadel at The University of Texas at Arlington. The scholarship will support a student pursuing a broadcasting degree in the Department of Communication.
“When I went to college, there were very few schools offering broadcasting classes, and I was never able to take any,” Nadel said. “I love the fact that this is an available field of study at UTA, and I’m thrilled and honored to have this type of scholarship in my name.”
Nadel is in his 46th season of calling games for the 2023 World Series Champions. He says he is hopeful “this scholarship will provide a pathway to a broadcasting career for students who might otherwise not get the opportunity.”
The Department of Communication is home to several award-winning broadcasting programs—UTA News en Español, UTA News and UTA Radio. The department offers specific coursework for students interested in sports broadcasting, particularly with UTA Radio Sports.
Lance Liguez, broadcast specialist and UTA Radio faculty advisor, said students on staff with UTA Radio have opportunities to explore sports-specific broadcasting paths, such as calling play-by-play of UTA sporting events or sports talk shows where students can choose their own format. Students also have opportunities to cover events happening around the area, including the Texas Rangers, Dallas Wings and the United Football League. UTA students get access to a wide range of sports broadcasting opportunities, including college bowl games, NCAA basketball tournaments and more.
“We’re able to get students in with broadcasting credentials for certain games and students get to cover those sporting events,” Liguez said. “One of the reasons why we encourage our students to go and cover those games outside of UTA is to network a little bit with other journalists and build relationships, which can lead to an internship or job opportunity down the line. Getting more scholarships allows more people to get involved and gives our students an extra incentive to pursue what they want to do and get into this field. This new award will help them achieve that goal.”
