Dr. Frank L. Lewis

Frank L. Lewis received the BS in Electrical Engineering & Physics from Rice University in 1971, the MS in Aeronautical Engineering from Univ. West Florida in 1977, and the Ph.D. from Georgia Tech in 1981. He served in the U.S. Navy during 1971-1977, serving as Navigator aboard the frigate USS Trippe (FF-1075), and Executive Officer and Acting Commanding Officer aboard USS Salinan (ATF-161). He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and a Chartered Engineer with the United Kingdom Engineering Council. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of IFAC, and a Fellow of the U.K. Institute of Measurement & Control. He is the Editor of the Taylor & Francis book series in Automation & Control Engineering. Dr. Lewis is the recipient of awards including a Fulbright Research Award, the Int. Neural Network Society Gabor Award, the Neural Network Pioneer Award, and the American Society of Engineering Education F.E. Terman Award. He received the IEEE Control Systems Society Best Chapter Award (as Founding Chairman). He received the IEEE Dallas Section "Outstanding Service Award" in 1994, and was selected as Engineer of the Year in 1995 by the Ft. Worth IEEE Section. He served on NASA Committee on Space Station. Founding Member of Mediterranean Control Association. Received the 2010 IEEE Region 5 Outstanding Engineering Educator Award and the 2010 UTA Graduate Deanís Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring Award.
Dr. Lewis has graduated 40 Ph.D. students, including 3 NSF Career Awardees. He is the author or co-author of 6 U.S. patents, 250 journal papers, 360 referred published conference papers, 52 book chapters, and 14 books including Optimal Control, Optimal Estimation, Applied Optimal Control and Estimation, Aircraft Control and Simulation, Control of Robot Manipulators, and Neural Network Control.
His current research interests focus on nonlinear control systems, networked dynamical agents on communication graphs, multi-player game theory, and adaptive learning systems.
