Dr. Anand Puppala is a professor of civil engineering and coordinator of the geotechnical engineering program at The University of Texas (UTA).  He joined UTA as an assistant professor in 1996 and was promoted to associate professor in 2001 and to professor in 2005.  He teaches a variety of geotechnical courses in the Civil Engineering Department and has developed five new courses (four graduate and one undergraduate).

Dr. Puppala has been actively involved with the National Academy of Science’s Transportation Research Board (TRB) since 1992.  He is the current chairman of the TRB committee on Soil and Rock Instrumentation (AFS 20) and is a member of two other TRB committees: Cementitious Stabilization (AFS80) and Exploration and Classification of Earth Materials (AFP20).  He served as chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Geotechnical Institute’s Engineering Geology and Site Characterization Committee from 2003-2006.  He also recently completed his term (2007-2009) as president of the United States Universities Council on Geotechnical Education and Research (USUCGER).

Dr. Puppala has authored or co-authored 6 book chapters, 43 journal publications, 30 ASCE and ASTM geotechnical special publications, 21 refereed conference papers, 48 conference papers and 22 technical reports.  He has supervised 11 doctoral and 30 masters students.   He has received numerous awards, including the CE Department's Best Teacher Award (twice), the College of Engineering’s Research Excellence Award in 2004-2005, and the College of Engineering’s Outstanding Young Faculty Award in 2000-2001.  He was also the recipient of the 2008 UTA award for Outstanding Advisor – Graduate Student Category.

Dr. Puppala currently serves as an editor for three prestigious journals, including the American Society of Testing Materials’ Geotechnical Testing Journal and the American Society of Civil Engineers’ journals of Materials, and Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering.  He is also the deputy chief editor of Thomas Telford’s Ground Improvement Journal (UK) and has edited several books, including ASCE’s Geotechnical Special Publication on Site Characterization.
