David Silva received his A.B. magna cum laude in Linguistics from Harvard University in 1986. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Cornell University (1992), completing a dissertation on the interface among phonetics, phonology and syntax in the Korean language. As a graduate student at Cornell, he was an A.D. White Fellow (1986-88), a Buttrick-Crippen Fellow (1991-92), and a Fulbright Fellow, studying in Seoul, Korea during the academic year 1989-90. He was also the first linguist to receive Cornell's Clark Distinguished Teaching Award (1989).
Dr. Silva joined the Linguistics faculty at UT Arlington in 1993, eventually serving as department chair from 2000 to 2007. His research interests include the study of phonological and phonetic variation, sociolinguistics, phonological theory, and language attitudes. He has conducted research on Korean, European Portuguese, and Dinka / Nuer (Sudan). Appointed to the post of Vice Provost in August 2007, Dr. Silva oversees UT Arlington's Active Learning Initiative.
