Doreen Elliott, PhD is a Professor of Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington, USA. Previously she served on the faculty of the School of Social Work at the University of Wales Cardiff, U.K. She has published six books including three co-edited international Handbooks: The World of Social Welfare: Social Welfare and Services in an International Context; The International Handbook on Social Work Education; and The International Handbook on Social Work Theory and Practice.

She has served as Chair of the CSWE International Commission and currently serves as chair of the CSWE Global Social Work Education Commission. She has served on a number of editorial boards for academic journals and as co-editor of the journal Social Development Issues. In a previous role as Director of the Doctoral program at UT Arlington, she was instrumental in setting up a joint doctoral program between UT Arlington and the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Monterrey, Mexico.

Other international activities include research and presentation of invited papers in New Zealand, Russia, Mauritius, and India. Doreen Elliott's previous books and other published work have focused on Social Work in the residential setting, child welfare, juvenile delinquency, and field practice in social work education.

Her most recent scholarship is focused on theory building in direct practice and an international approach in social work through Social Development, creating a progressive practice model using a structural, strengths and empowerment-based approach. At UT Arlington she teaches courses in the Direct Practice and Policy curriculum areas, the Integrative Seminar, and a Seminar in Social Work Education in the doctoral program. In 2004 she was honored with admission to the UT Arlington Academy of Distinguished Teachers and the title Distinguished Teaching Professor.
