Teaching Expertise: Distance education issues, Power Point slide development/use, Use of outside experts in the classroom.

Research and publications on oncology nursing are continuing projects for Dr. Karen B. Heusinkveld. Presentations during 1997 included: "A study of the role of the generalist oncology nurse as a basis for revision of the blueprint for certification"; "Managed care and cancer control: A primer for American cancer society volunteers and staff" for the American Cancer Society in Atlanta; "Health Care Reform," for the National Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, San Antonio, Texas; "The Impact of Managed Care on ACS Programs," American Cancer Society, Atlanta, Georgia; "Leadership Development," at the American Cancer Society Board Conference, Austin, Texas. She has requested funding from various agencies for the following research: "Advanced Oncology Nursing Practice Analysis." "Advanced Practice Public Health Nurse-MSN/MPH Partners"; "Fatigue Scale for Assessing Hispanicsˇ Experience"

In 1996, UTA Provost George Wright announced the establishment of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers to honor UTA Professors who demonstrate a long-term commitment to teaching. Inductees serve as mentors to new faculty and as members of an advisory board to the Provost. Dr. Karen Heusinkveld was the first of two members named last year.
