"Service learning is the perfect medium to grow the next generation of citizens-responsible, engaging, making a contribution to the society and the community."

Dr. Chyng-Yang Jang has been teaching at UTA since 2004 and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication.

He became familiar with service learning when someone from the Center for Service Learning gave a presentation to his department, and he discovered many of his colleagues were already implementing it into their courses.

Dr. Jang enjoyed the fellows program because he had the opportunity to hear different perspectives from faculty all over campus and how they exchanged ideas, thoughts, and experiences with one another regarding service learning.

He reflects on his inclusion of service learning into his curriculum because he gets to put everything together and see the project from end to end. He is making use of what he learned in the fellows program.

Dr. Jang believes service learning goes beyond teaching our students a discipline's specific knowledge to helping students engage in the community and make a contribution as a responsible and engaging citizen.

Chyng-Yang advises faculty who are hesitant about incorporating service learning to start with something small and easy to manage possibly starting with limited assignments until you feel more comfortable working with community partners.
