Homecoming's return to the fall semester was a huge success

Mavericks showed their pride as Homecoming festivities returned to the fall semester last week for the first time in more than 20 years.

"The fall Homecoming was a spectacular array of new and enhanced activities and events," V.P. for Student Affairs Frank Lamas said. "It was great to see our community come together and enjoy our beautiful campus and a wonderful opportunity to show our love for UT Arlington and our Maverick spirit and pride."

The Party on Pecan, which preceded the parade and game, featured live music, food, midway-type games, and barkers who energized the crowd.

An expanded Homecoming Parade, which included 85 entries including the Maverick Dance Team, the marching band color guard, and the Wranglers spirit group, got the crowd ready for the men's basketball game against Oklahoma.

A record crowd of 6,421 watched as the Mavericks narrowly lost to the Sooners, 63-59.

Business management senior Garrett Jones and interdisciplinary studies junior Melisa Gonzalez were crowned Homecoming king and queen at halftime of the men's basketball game.

Also during Homecoming Week, the women's volleyball team clinched a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with a victory over Louisiana Tech, and the women's basketball team lost to Oral Roberts.

An Arlington State College Reunion and an All-Greek Reunion were highlights for the alumni.

New events included an Afterparty with fireworks, a 5K Walk/Run, and the Homecoming Golf Tournament. Among the old favorites were the step show, chili cook-off, concerts, and The Bash celebration.
