UTA Recruitment Office Welcomes High School Counselors with Newsletter

Students celebrate after graduation

UT Arlington's Office of Undergraduate Recruitment welcomes high school counselors back to school with the launch of the first issue of the MavLink newsletter.

This newsletter serves as a virtual link to UTA – summarizing important events, and keeping you aware of updates and impending deadlines.

UT Arlington made significant advancements and improvements last year. The incoming freshmen class represented our best and brightest class yet. Nearly 90% of incoming freshmen graduated in the top half of their high school classes. As a result, more than $13.4 million in scholarships were awarded to new and returning students for 2011-12.

Physical changes are also underway on campus. The new Engineering Research Building opened last spring, and construction on the College Park Center continues. The CPC will open in January as work continues in the College Park District to open Vandergriff Hall, a new Student Welcome Center, retail stores, and apartments in the summer of 2012.

If you have received this newsletter in your email, you are already subscribed and will receive our next issue in November.  You can choose to unsubscribe online, or you can also recommend a subscription to your colleagues online. For more information about the University, please contact your admissions counselor or visit the Office of Undergraduate Recruitment’s website at www.uta.edu/admissions.

Maverick Speakers Series Announces Lineup for 2011-12

Emmitt Smith

UT Arlington recently announced the lineup for the 2011-12 Maverick Speakers Series, a program that exposes students and the community to big ideas about innovation and societal change from the leading voices of our time.

Emmitt Smith, the National Football League’s all-time leading rusher, opens the series on October 20, 2011. He’ll bring his insights about football and life in a lecture titled, “A Championship Vision.”

The founders of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, mark the second event on November 17. They will speak about entrepreneurism, social responsibility and their radical business philosophy.

The spring semester will feature CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien, oceanographer and discoverer of the Titanic wreck Robert Ballard, and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush.

Previous speakers included Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Sally Ride, David Gergen, Ken Burns, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Cal Ripken, Jr. The series began in 2008.

Tickets to the Maverick Speakers Series are free and available at utatickets.com

Preview Day Registration Opened Sep. 5

Preview Day begins Oct. 29

The Office of Undergraduate Recruitment opened registration for Preview Day, UT Arlington's open house event, on September 5.

Preview Day allows students to discover what life at UT Arlington is like, including the different academic and student life opportunities available at the University. The half-day events are held four times each year. The fall semester Preview Days will be held on October 29 and November 19.

The event offers a flexible schedule so that prospective students and their families can choose the sessions that are most important to them. After the welcome session, students have the opportunity to take a campus tour, visit housing facilities, listen to sessions about each of the academic colleges, mingle with current UTA students and department representatives at an Academic and Student Life Fair, and attend information sessions relative to the college search process (admission, housing, financial aid and scholarships). A sample schedule can be found online.

Preview Day's regular sessions run from 8am to 1:10pm, with an optional academic tour from 1:15pm to 2:30pm.

Preview Day is free to students and their guests.  Counselors can encourage their students to sign up for Preview Day online at www.uta.edu/previewday.

Special Events for Top High School Performers

Many top students made UT Arlington their university of choice this year, but the Office of Undergraduate Recruitment will continue to focus their attention on the brightest, highest-achieving students again this year through special events just for top performers.  About 27% of incoming students graduated in the top 10% of their high school class.

Senior Academic Excellence Day is a unique "day-in-the-life" event for students who score high on their SAT or ACT test.  These events are limited to 30 students so that the Recruitment Office can program a tailor-made schedule that is unique to each students interests.  Each student's day can include personal meetings with representatives from their academic college, sitting in on a college course, and other custom sessions.

These events are invitation-only and UT Arlington only invites students who earned at least a 1200 SAT (CR+M) or a 27 ACT score.  This limits the eligible attendees to students who would be eligible for the highest scholarship awards.

We encourage you to help us identify your top students.  Please contact your admissions counselor if you work with a student who would be the right candidate for this event, but was not invited.  UT Arlington's admissions counselors will be able to invite eligible students who do not have a current SAT or ACT score on file at the recommendation of their high school guidance counselor, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.
