Research Interests:

Professor Petruso specializes in Mediterranean archaeology, more specifically the economic prehistory of the Aegean. He has published extensively on the weight metrology of Minoan and Mycenaean Greece and its ramifications for our understanding of the mechanics of ancient trade, the economic relationships among the polities of the Bronze Age eastern Mediterranean, and the evolution of mathematics and technology in antiquity. His secondary interest is in ancient ships and seafaring. He has excavated underwater in the Aegean, and has participated in, directed and done research at archaeological sites in Greece, Egypt, Portugal and Cyprus. In 1992 he organized the first American archaeological project ever permitted in Albania, in a cave that preserved evidence of human occupation in the paleolithic, mesolithic and neolithic periods.
