master of architecture

The purpose of the Master of Architecture degree program is to educate toward ultimate leadership positions within the profession of architecture. Within a broad curriculum, design as a discipline and a process is emphasized. Students are encouraged to give rich visual and material substance to both theoretical and pragmatic ideas. The context for design at the UT-Arlington focuses on the contemporary urban condition, a viewpoint especially appropriate for a school at the heart of a diverse, expanding, and internationally oriented region like Dallas/Fort Worth.

There are three distinct programs of study in architecture, which provide options to graduate students with different backgrounds and needs. They require approximately 3-1/2 years, two years, and one year, respectively.

Path A
The 3-1/2-year master’s program serves students holding a degree in a field other than architecture. An intensive and integrated professional curriculum has been specifically developed for those with degrees in the liberal arts, the sciences, business, or other professions Students enter this program in the Summer Semester which begins at the end of May to Fall semester which begins at the end of August.

Path B
The two-year master’s program serves students holding the B.S. or B.A. degree with a major in architecture. A full professional curriculum of advanced courses and design studios builds on the four-year undergraduate architecture degree. Students enter this program in any term.

Path C
The one-year master’s program serves students holding the first professional degree in architecture. Advanced courses, design studios, and independent work build on the five-year B.Arch. degree. Students enter this program in any term. Path A and Path B, both leading to first professional degrees, are fully accredited by the NAAB; Path C, as a postgraduate second professional degree, is not.(Students desiring a 2nd professional degree may apply for advanced standing in the Path B program.)

Visiting faculty members are an integral part of the graduate program at UT-Arlington. Noted teachers from other schools in the U.S. and abroad as well as distinguished practicing architects offer advanced design studios each year. Thus, students have access to both a core of permanent faculty members and a changing spectrum of approaches and values. In addition to on-campuss course work, graduate students may study and travel abroad as an integrated part of the curriculum. The School maintains semester-long, full-credit student exchanges during the academic year with architecture schools at the Universities of Barcelona (Spain), Lund (Sweden), and Innsbruck (Austria). During the summer, there are full-credit travel programs to Rome, Florence, and Verona.

Degree Requirements

The applicant must meet the general requirements of the Graduate School. A personal interview with the Graduate Adviser is recommended, and letters of reference are required. Applicants who hold a degree but do not meet the minimum requirements of a Bachelor of Science in Architecture should apply for the Path A program. Applicants to the professional degree programs Paths B and C must submit a portfolio of work for evaluation by the School.

Undergraduate students must have approval of the Graduate Advisor prior to enrollment in graduate courses. All graduate students in architecture are required to consult the Graduate Advisor for approval of their final program of work during their final semester prior to graduation.
