laptop policy

Effective June 30, 2007, the School of Architecture will require each student in the Architecture (B.S. Architecture) and Interior Design (B.S. Interior Design) undergraduate majors, the Path B Architecture (M.Arch) graduate program and the Landscape Architecture (M.Landscape Arch) program to have a personal laptop computer configured to the School's specifications. This requirement responds to the changes in the professions of Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture resulting from the widespread adoption of computer technology in recent years.

For undergraduate students in Architecture and Interior Design this requirement will be attached to enrollment in ARCH 3343 and INTD 3343. These courses will be reconstructed to focus on the use of the computer and digital tools in design. All students will be required to have their own laptop for use in class.

For graduate students, a personal laptop will be required for enrollment in the Path B Architecture and Landscape Architecture programs. Path A students will not be required to have a laptop until they move to the Path B course sequence.

With any significant change in the curriculum there will be some difficulties in implementation and likely some unanticipated consequences, however, the policy will advance the state of computing within the curriculum, provide an enhanced digital base for students, and allow the School to redirect its computer budget to network services, peripheral and output devices and more advanced technology to augment the individual laptop capabilities.

The two courses, ARCH 3343 and INTD 3343, will focus entirely on the use of computers in design, primarily on the creation, development and representation of design ideas and proposals as an extension of the traditional graphic repertoire of the designer.
