computing facilities
Because The University of Texas at Arlington uses email as its official form of communication, each and every student is automatically assigned an email address, access to MavSpace and 100 MB J:drive file storage space and an printing account through the Pharos print server upon completing their enrollment. Completing enrollment usually means paying all fees. See the Office of Information Technology at UT Arlington or call the Computing Helpdesk at: (817) 272-2208 for additional information.
Although laptops may be used many places on the UT Arlington campus, including the Architecture building via wireless connection, there are also three hardwire computer access locations in the Architecture Building. They are:
1. OIT Supported Architecture Computer Lab (Rooms 319 and 324, Architecture).
This site is maintained by the UT Arlington Office of Information Technology (OIT). The OIT Architecture Computer Lab site consists of two labs. At any time, only one of these labs may be may be scheduled by teaching faculty for instruction through the university's Astra Scheduling Group (campus ext. 2-3236). As a result, one lab is always available for student use on a "first-come-first-served" basis. Lab assistants are available to provide information. Labs are open from 7AM to 2AM seven days a week. However, hours of operation are reduced during summer and intersessions. Please see the hours of operation posted at the Lab entrances.
Hardware:
42 - Dell Precision 380 3GHz Dual Core 930 desktop computers with 4 GB of RAM and 19" LCD color monitors.
All desktop computers are networked and have DVD R/W capabilities.
Peripheral Hardware:
2 - HP LaserJet B&W (8.5" x 11") printers
2 - HP Color Business Inkjet (8.5" x 11") printers
40 - Canon 8.5" x 11" 600dpi flatbed scanners
2 - Epson Expression 1640XL 12" x 17" 1200dpi flatbed scanner
The OIT Supported Architecture Computer Lab (Rooms 319 and 324, Architecture) only provides 20 pound bond for wide format plotting and 20 pound 8.5 x 11 paper for printing. The School of Architecture Computer Graphics Lab (Room 103, Architecture) provides printing and plotting on special media.
Please see the OIT Architecture Computer Lab and The School of Architecture Computer Graphics Lab Plotting Fees section of this guide for information about fees for printing and plotting.
2. The Architecture and Fine Arts Library (Room 104, Architecture).
This site provides hardware for internet access and medium format flatbed scanning (11" x 17"), three laptop computers for four-hour check-out and text copy services managed by the university's Pharos printing system including two black and white laser and one color laser printer. The library is open: Monday through Thursday 8:00AM - 11:00PM, Friday 8:00AM - 6:00PM, Saturday 10:00AM - 6:00PM and Sunday 1:00PM - 11:00PM. Hours of operation are reduced during the summer and also during intersessions.
3. School of Architecture Computer Graphics Lab (Room 103, Architecture).
The School of Architecture maintains a general Computer Graphics Lab. When not being used for scheduled class instruction this space is available for student use on a "first-come-first-served" basis. In addition to 22 desktop workstations, this lab also supports medium format scanning, color plotting, rendering and animation. This lab is open from 8:00AM - 12:00AM (Midnight) Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM - 5:00PM Friday, 10:00AM - 10:00PM Saturday and Sunday during the regular semester.

OIT Architecture Computer Lab and The School of Architecture Computer Graphics Lab Plotting Fees
A general fee for student computer use is associated with most School of Architecture courses. In addition, there is a fifty dollar ($50.00) per semester fee for the unlimited plotting of computer-generated graphics in either the OIT supported Architecture Computer Lab (Rooms 319 and 324, Architecture) or the School of Architecture Computer Graphics Lab (Room 103 Architecture). This fee must be paid by students at the university Bursar's office prior to the start of each academic session in which they plan to plot drawings/ graphics using the wide format HP DesignJet printers in both labs. See Printing in OIT Computing Facilities for additional information.
There are no user fees for student use of scanning technology located in the School of Architecture Graphics Lab.
