James Richards, FASLA is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture in the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington, where his teaching, research and creative activities focus on urban design, design thinking and design drawing.  He is a national award-winning designer, artist, author, and educator whose work has creatively spanned landscape architecture, town planning, and urban design for 35 years on projects in 17 states.  He is a co-founder and principal of TOWNSCAPE, Inc., an urban design consultancy based in Fort Worth and Vancouver, where he creates plans for downtown revitalizations, new town centers, urban villages, transportation corridors and transit-oriented developments.  As a concept designer, Jim is a spark plug for creative interdisciplinary teams. In this role he has enjoyed creative collaborations with many national design firms. Prior to 1994, Jim was a design principal and studio director for the national environmental planning and design firm Johnson, Johnson and Roy/inc. (now SmithGroupJJR), where he mentored staff in design thinking and directed the planning and design of many of the firm’s award-winning projects, including the Austin Town Lake Plan, the Auburn University Master Plan, the Materials Science Building at Los Alamos National Laboratories, and Exxon Corporate Headquarters.  He has served as visiting lecturer and jury critic at numerous universities, and as adjunct faculty at the University of Texas’ School of Architecture.  His projects and teaching are enriched by extensive travel, having studied and sketched hundreds of cities and projects in 43 countries across the globe.   Jim is a member of the Council of Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and recipient of ASLA's Bradford Williams Medal for writing. He is a member of the Board of Directors and global blog correspondent for the international non-profit Urban Sketchers, and founder of Urban Sketchers Texas. His book, Freehand Drawing and Discovery: Urban Sketching and Concept Drawing for Designers, was published by John Wiley & Sons in February 2013, and received a national Honor Award from the ASLA in 2014.
