Ten Dallas architecture firms, plus a student design studio at the University of Texas at Arlington, won honors Thursday in the 2008 AIA Dallas Design Awards. Sponsored by the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the awards recognize outstanding built and unbuilt designs by local architects.
Of more than 116 submissions, more than one-third were for clients in other countries. The awards were presented at AT&T Plaza in Victory Park.
Ron Wommack won both Best of Show and the Dallas AIA Honor Award for his 2401 Douglas Ave. residence. The jury praised “disciplined use of simple materials” and “a poetic series of spaces.”
Merit awards were presented to:
Cunningham Architects for the House on Cedar Hill.
Susan Appleton for a Pilates studio created in an existing residential carport.
ArchiTexas for adaptive reuse of the White Rock Filter Building and Basin Boathouse at White Rock Lake.
Laguarda Low Architects for Light & Sie Gallery, an adaptive reuse of warehouse space in the Dallas Design District.
The Dallas office of the international architecture firm HDR for two yet-to-be-built residential structures at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory in Braga, Portugal.
Fernando Teruya Architects for a courthouse in Madrid, Spain.
Morrison Seifert Murphy for One Arts Plaza, the mixed-use high-rise in the Dallas Arts District.
The Community Design Award and the Urban Edge Excellence in Sustainable Design Award went to Brent Brown, his colleagues at buildingcommunity WORKSHOP and a group of architecture students at UTA for their 698-square-foot Holding House in South Dallas.
The Jurors’ Choice Award went to ArchiTexas for the Joule hotel. A Citation Award in the unbuilt-design category went to the Dallas office of RTKL Associates for a system of parks and bridges called Gateway to L.A.
Jurors included Thom Mayne, designer of Dallas’ planned Perot Museum of Nature & Science; Andres Lepic, curator of architecture and design, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Victoria Meyers, New York architect; Edward Keegan, editor at large for Architect magazine; and Richard Clarke, architect of Dallas’ Federal Reserve Bank.
