Maruszczak wins theoretical White House design competition

A design by University of Texas at Arlington School of Architecture professor John Maruszczak has been awarded First Prize in the “White House Redux” competition, sponsored by Storefront for Art and Architecture, in association with Control Group. The winning design team also included assistant Ryan Manning and former visiting professor Roger Connah.

An international call for ideas was issued by the competition in January 2008, with a simple mission statement. “What if the White House, the ultimate architectural symbol of political power, were to be designed today?” The competition received almost five hundred submissions from forty-two countries around the world. The winning designs will be featured in a month-long exhibition at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York through the month of October. A companion book will be available on October 2, in a limited edition run of five hundred copies.

Associate Professor Maruszczak worked with Raimund Abraham in New York and Arquitectonica in Miami before coming to UT Arlington in 1984. He received Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill Educator’s Travelling Fellowship in 1986 and UT Arlington’s Distinguished Award for Creativity and Research in 1991. He has won a number of prestigious awards in architectural competitions, including First Prizes for the Dallas Police Memorial in 1995, and Chicago Miegs Field, 1994 (with E. Baum); First Prize for Visionary Landscapes competition, 1994; and First Prize in the 1993 Computer Forum competiton of the San Francisco AIA. His work has been published in Progressive Architecture, Princeton Journal, Japan Architect, Texas Architect, Landscape Architecture, and in The Education of an Architect, Rizzoli.
