Book by Architecture Professor Holliday Wins Award

Assistant Professor Kate Holliday’s book Leopold Eidlitz: Architecture and Idealism in the Gilded Age was published by W. W. Norton in 2008 and was awarded the 2008 Book Prize by the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians and the 2009 Architecture Book Prize by the Victorian Society of America Metropolitan Chapter (New York). Dr. Holliday was awarded a Faculty Research Enhancement Program grant (2009-2010) by UT Arlington to fund work on her next book Humanism and Modernism: Ralph Walker and Modern American Architecture on the New York architect Ralph Walker and his attempt to craft a modernism compatible with “humanist” ideals from the 1920s to the 1950s.


She guest edited a special issue of Studies in the Decorative Arts (spring 2009) dedicated to the theme “Unraveling the Textile in Modern Architecture” and her article “Whose City Hall Is It? Architecture and Identity in New Orleans” appeared in the Fall 2009 issue of the Journal of Urban Design in a special issue dedicated to the post-Katrina New Orleans. She also founded and directs the Oral History of Texas Architecture Project, which captures the knowledge of modernist Texas architects through interviews and yearly symposia. The 2009 interviews and symposium were dedicated to the work of Midland and Dallas architect Frank Welch; the upcoming 2010 symposium will take place at the Nasher Sculpture Center and be dedicated to the work of E. G. Hamilton and his Dallas firm, Omniplan. She has also recently been appointed to the Texas Historical Commission’s State Board of Review and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Architectural Education.
