Landscape Architecture at UT Arlington Ranked in Top 20
Posted: November 30, 2009, 8:00 am
In the eleventh annual publication of America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools for 2010, Design Intelligence has ranked the Program in Landscape Architecture at The University of Texas at Arlington’s School of Architecture among the top twenty schools in the nation, alongside programs at Harvard, Cornell, Michigan, and Texas A&M . UT Arlington tied with Cal Poly Pomona, UC-Berkeley, and Illinois for 15th place in the listing.
The School of Architecture at UT Arlington has been recognized previously by the publication. In the 2008 edition of America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools, Design Intelligence ranked the Graduate Architecture Program as second in the South, just behind Clemson University. In 2006, the School of Architecture was ranked fifth overall in the region and tied for first place with Rice University in the “Most Innovative Architecture Programs” category.
“The Program’s high visibility in the profession and in academic circles explains this recognition,” says Prof. Gary Robinette, landscape architecture faculty member. “Our students and faculty have received numerous awards for their design and research and our alumni have distinguished themselves in practice across Texas and throughout the U.S.”
The UT Arlington Program also was cited as a program of “Notable Distinction” in the category of World-Class Landscape Architecture Schools, along with the Rhode Island School of Design, Arizona, Colorado and Texas Tech.
“I’ve had associations with a number of universities,” said Dr. Pat D. Taylor, Program Director. “And, the accomplishments of this Program and School are as laudable as any with which I’ve been associated. This Program is one of four accredited programs in Texas, and the only one located in such a major market. Our success is linked to the activities and priorities of North Texas, which makes this an even greater laboratory to study landscape architecture.”
“This is another indication of the rising reputation and influence of the School of Architecture and our graduates,” said Architecture Dean Donald Gatzke. “The landscape architecture profession is undergoing an evolution in its mission and purpose. Increasingly, it’s taking on the very difficult challenges of regional development and environmental rehabilitation. Clearly, the Program in Landscape Architecture at UT Arlington is one of the leaders in this movement.”
Design Intelligence is a bi-monthly report on the future and the repository of timely articles, original research, and industry news. It is published by the Design Futures Council, an interdisciplinary network of design, product, and construction leaders exploring global trends, challenges, and opportunities to advance innovation and shape the future of the industry and environment. Members include leading architecture and design firms, dynamic manufacturers, service providers, and forward-thinking AEC firms of all sizes that take an active interest in their future. To help determine their ranking Design Intelligence solicits opinions about respected programs from deans, directors and chairs of landscape architecture programs in North America.
