Holliday Presents Lecture at NYC's Skyscraper Museum

UT Arlington School of Architecture professor Kate Holliday will present a lecture at the Skyscraper Museum in New York City on October 25, 2010, as part of the museum’s 2010 lecture series.


Professor Holliday’s presentation, titled “Ralph Walker and the Making of 1 Wall Street”, will examine the Art Deco headquarters of the Irving Trust, now home of the Bank of New York, which culminated architect Ralph Walker’s skyscraper designs of the 1920s. More expensive and elaborate than his firm’s previous designs, 1 Wall Street epitomized Walker’s concept of “humanism”, a modern approach to the integration of hand-craft and machine work.


The lecture will take place in conjunction with an exhibit that Holliday is co-organizing, to be held October 25-27 at the Center for Architecture in New York in celebration of the 125th anniversary of Walker’s firm.


Kate Holliday is an architectural historian and Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Arlington. Her research focuses on American architecture and theory, particularly interactions with Europe. Her book Leopold Eidlitz: Architecture and Idealism in the Gilded Age (W. W. Norton, 2008) won the 2008 Book of the Year Award from the southeast chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. She is currently writing a book about Ralph Walker, with support from a Research Enhancement Program grant provided by the Office of the Provost at UT Arlington.


Located in New York City, the Skyscraper Museum celebrates the city’s rich architectural heritage and examines the historical forces and individuals that have shaped its successive skylines. Through exhibitions, programs and publications, the museum explores tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, and places of work and residence.
