Landscape Architecture Director Cited for Service to Scholarly Society

Pat D. Taylor, Director of UT Arlington's Program in Landscape Architecture, has been honored with the President's Award for Extraordinary Service to CELA, the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture.  Taylor was singled-out for his actions to stabilize the organization upon the unexpected death of its former Executive Director two weeks prior to the 2010 CELA annual conference in the Netherlands. 

CELA Past-President, Claudia Phillips of Philadelphia University, noted that Taylor, who was serving as CELA Treasurer at the time, "...stepped in to grab the reins of the organization at a time when its very existence was at stake.  His focused dedication to ‘righting the ship' allowed continuance of CELA through his willingness to serve as Interim Executive Director."

CELA is an international organization of universities and faculty members whose mission is to prepare graduates for public, private and academic practice in landscape architecture, one of the fastest growing environmental fields in the world.  Landscape architects not only own the capacity to envision solutions to complex environmental problems, they also have the skills to design and construct their solutions.

There are over 65 accredited landscape architecture schools in the United States.  UT Arlington's graduate-only curriculum is nationally ranked having been tied in 2010 with Illinois, Utah State, Cal Poly Pomona and UC Berkeley.  Taylor has served as Director since 1992.  He received his CELA award in Los Angeles at the 2011 annual conference hosted by the University of Southern California.
