Mark Lamster named critic in joint appointment
Posted: March 12, 2013, 1:30 pm
Noted author and editor Mark Lamster has been named architecture critic at the Dallas Morning News. As part of a joint appointment with the University of Texas at Arlington's School of Architecture, he will join the faculty of the David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture, where he will teach a graduate seminar on criticism and critical writing. Both appointments will begin in April 2013.
The appointment has garnered attention in a number of media outlets.
The Dallas Morning News, UT Arlington Hire New York Arts, Culture Writer as Architecture Critic, Professor in Practice in Joint Position (MarketWatch, Wall Street Journal, 3/11/13)
"UT Arlington President James D. Spaniolo said that Lamster's appointment will further illuminate the reputation of the University's School of Architecture.
"'We are pleased to add Mark Lamster to UT Arlington's distinguished architecture faculty,' Spaniolo said. 'His experience will afford our students new opportunities to interact with communities and leaders in the world of urban design. Mark will add depth and richness to our students' academic endeavors.'"
Architecture: Mark Lamster named as critic for ‘The Dallas Morning News’ (Dallas Morning News, 3/11/13)
"'Mark is certainly going to bring a wide national and international perspective on the culture of architecture and urbanism to the UT-Arlington School of Architecture,' [Architecture Dean Don] Gatzke said. 'His courses are certain to quickly become among our most popular offerings, not only among architecture students but across disciplines.'"
Meet Mark Lamster, the Dallas Morning News‘ New Architecture Critic (FrontRow, D Magazine, 3/11/13)
"And from the start, it seems like Lamster has his head in the right place. For one, in the News article announcing his arrival, he expresses interest not only in Dallas’ signature architectural projects, but also traditionally underserved communities. Indeed, while the starchitects often steal the spotlight, the more fascinating architectural practices in Dallas these days include smaller, community-oriented firms like Brent Brown’s bcWorkshop."
Mark Lamster Named Architecture Critic of Dallas Morning News (FrontBurner, D Magazine, 3/11/13)
"Comes word this morning that the Morning News has itself a new architecture critic. The paper was able to make the hire with the help of UTA’s David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture, where he will teach a graduate seminar. Those interested can catch him at the David Dillon Symposium, at the Nasher, April 18 and 19."
The Dallas Way (Observatory, Design Observer, 3/11/13)
"It is especially heartening, and I suspect not just for me, to see a major metropolitan newspaper finding a way to add an architecture critic to its payroll in 2013. That speaks to the level of interest in architecture and urban planning in Dallas generally, but also to the leadership at the paper and at the university, who together have found a way to make this position possible. Though there has been a welcome proliferation of architectural and urban criticism online, it is a sad fact that the professional rank in daily print journalism is an endangered species. These positions, in my opinion, have the greatest power to shape discourse and policy in the service of the broadest possible public. I am honored and humbled to be joining this select group of practioners." - Mark Lamster
