Klyde Warren Park Landscape Performance Series case study published

A new case study of Klyde Warren Park, in Dallas, Texas, has been published to the Landscape Architecture Foundation's (LAF) award-winning Landscape Performance Series (LPS). This unique online database now includes over 60 exemplary landscape projects with quantified environmental, economic and social benefits. The impact of Klyde Warren Park was assessed and documented through LAF's innovative Case Study Investigation (CSI) program in collaboration with a fellow faculty and research assistants in the Program in Landscape Architecture at UT Arlington, and the Landscape Architecture design firm, The Office of James Burnett.

The UT Arlington team led this collaborative research effort and conducted performance research by documenting and analyzing primary and secondary data regarding the case studies. The empirical data was acquired through innovative methodologies adopted by the research team to derive comprehensive set of landscape performance benefits.  Continued review and distillation of the benefits allowed the team, with LAF and the firm liaison, to craft the published work now available to view online. 

The City of Dallas' drive to connect the region with the rich downtown center epitomizes the impact of connectivity with Klyde Warren Park.  The pedestrian bridge superimposes a major highway and links the growing Uptown and vibrant Arts District. The introduction of the innovative green space is emerging as a cultural hot-spot for the city. Amenities unique to the area include a dynamic playground space, open activity mall space, an outdoor reading room, parking spaces for food trucks along the pedestrian walkway with numerous movable seating opportunities, and many others. Ample shade from pavilions and planted native Red Oaks combines with the green and open spaces.  The native plant design reduces the urban heat island effect over the 5.2 acre extent of the park.  An indirect result of the park's success is the recorded increase in property value of adjacent parcels. Results from an intensive on-site survey of over approximately 224 respondents displayed an increase in user's quality of life, a promotion of healthy living and creation of a safe and secure environment in the urban setting. Klyde Warren Park is a herald for Dallas' embrace of innovative urban landscape design that promotes livability, sustainability and overall urbanity. Its inception is a clear example of how innovative green space can be introduced to the most inhospitable man-made habitats through a strong vision and forward thinking partnerships between stakeholders and the community.

Landscape Architecture Foundation selected nine research fellows and over 21 projects on a competitive basis for the Case Study Investigation (CSI) Program in 2013. Taner R. Ozdil, Ph.D., Associate Professor at School of Architecture and the Research Fellow for CSI lead the UT Arlington's team. Sameepa Modi and Dylan Stewart, MLA Candidates at UT Arlington were Graduate Research Assistants for the CSI research. The three case studies were completed by the UT Arlington team in collaboration with professionals are Klyde Warren Park, designed by Office of James Burnett; Buffalo Bayou Promenade, designed by SWA Group and The University of Texas at Dallas Campus Identity and Landscape Framework Plan, designed by PWP Landscape Architecture.  Klyde Warren Park is the final of the three case study completed by UT Arlington and published by the LAF website in 2013.
