general hardware specification

The UT Arlington School of Architecture does not endorse any particular computer manufacturer, brand or vendor.

Any laptop computer meeting the minimum requirements set out in this section is acceptable for use by qualified students. Because there are differences in operating systems specified in this document, students seeking to run application software such as AutoCAD Student Edition are requested to read this section and Section V. General Software Specification of this document with care.

As the specification emphasizes performance over any particular manufacturer or brand, please note that two standards (required and preferred) are often specified.

CPU Type: Intel “Core i3” required, Intel Core i5 preferred.  AMD “Turion II” 2.5GHz required, AMD "Phenom II" preferred.

Speed: Minimum Speed 2.1 GHz (Intel), 2.6 GHz (AMD) 

RAM: 2 GB minimum; 4GB recommended

Hard Disk: 320 GB, 7200rpm required

CDROM RW DVD RW: required

Screen size: 15 inch required*

Graphics Card: 256 MB minimum required**; 512MB recommended

Ethernet: Integrated 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN required

Wireless: Integrated 802.11b/g/n required

USB - Firewire: USB 2.0 required

Operating System: Windows 7 required. Windows Home Premium, Windows 7 Ultimate, or Windows 7 Professional 32 - bit or 64 - bit (64 - bit preferred).

*Monitors greater than 20 inches may be purchased for less money than a laptop with a screen larger than the 15 inch size specified above.  See Frequently Asked Question 14, below, for more information.

**256MB of memory and specific chipsets are required on the graphics card (or embedded graphic processors on laptops) to run AutoCAD 2012 Student Edition. Please review these special requirements for AutoCAD 2012 Student Edition before purchasing a laptop.
