The buildingcommunityWORKSHOP is a Dallas based nonprofit community design center seeking to improve the livability and viability of communities through the practice of thoughtful design and making. We enrich the lives of citizens by bringing design thinking to areas of our city where resources are most scarce. To do so, the bcWORKSHOP recognizes that it must first understand the social, economic, and environmental issues facing a community before beginning work.
The bcWORKSHOP’s current programs serve households and neighborhoods, with projects located primarily Dallas and Brownsville, Texas. With the addition of VISTA volunteers as listed below, we will target communities in the Brownsville area.

The Arlington Urban Design Center, located in the Arlington City Hall, has one position beginning approximately September 1 and continuing through the fall and spring semesters. Candidates must be students enrolled full time.

Paid Internship at THC
With the application deadline fast approaching, we hope that you will take a moment to remind your students, and any student groups that you work with, about a paid internship opportunity at the Texas Historical Commission (THC) for the summer of 2012. The deadline for applications is January 31, 2012.
The THC created the Diversity Internship in Historic Preservation to build interest in and awareness of careers in historic preservation, specifically among students from underrepresented ethnic groups. This initiative targets undergraduate and graduate students to encourage their interest in pursuing fields of study in history, preservation, architecture, archeology, downtown revitalization, and heritage tourism. Students will learn about the impact that historic preservation programs can have on a community’s economic development. Working with THC staff and programs will expose the interns to the various and exciting vocational opportunities in the field of historic preservation, with the goal of encouraging more students from underrepresented ethnic groups to pursue careers in this field upon graduation.
Diversity interns will complete a rotation among all divisions headquartered in Austin the first week, and then complete a special project in a previously determined division based on the student’s primary interest. More information on specific internship projects available for the summer of 2012 can be found in the application materials at the link below. Diversity interns will receive a $5,000 stipend provided by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission for an eight-week internship (40-hour week). Interns will work under the supervision of the THC, at its headquarters in Austin, and/or “in the field” with its historic sites and local preservation partners. Energy and Green Project Manager

UT Arlington School of Architecture has now received authority to launch a new interdepartmental research platform. The Center for Metropolitan Density (CfMD) will convene development industry leaders and conduct targeted research on density---with specific emphasis on benefits of higher densities on infrastructure, sustainability, quality of life and enhanced financial value.

The UT Arlington Center for Metropolitan Density (CfMD) objective is to encourage high density development through promoting research and analysis of both benefits and critical success factors for urban and suburban high density development, to demonstrate that developments of high density are the most economically fertile, operationally effective, fiscally efficient, environmentally responsible, and culturally supportive environments. The Center will accomplish this mission by conducting research, providing education, and consulting with key industry partners.
The Center for Metropolitan Density will test the following premises:
- Density of investment makes sense given shifts in capital sources
- Cap rates for denser developments are more favorable and stable over time
- The cradle of innovation: new ideas and artistic invention are uniquely sponsored in dense environments
- Workplace density provides better workforce choices and efficiency

3D Modeler Needed

I am looking for a 3D modeler to help in the production of three dimensional drawings for a patent application regarding a plumbing device that is built of standard PVC pipe. This is a very simple device with approximately 8-9 parts and should be easy to model. There is a full scale mockup of the device that can be used for accurate dimensioning in the production of the drawings. There are two versions of the device; one above ground and one in-ground with each having manual as well as electrical operating versions so there will be four versions of the same device.
There is a need for section as well as three dimensional drawings for each version of the device with the 3D modeling being sufficient for use in advertising information.
