Biography
Professor Ortiz teaches ART 3352 Digital Imaging, Art 4318 Advanced Digital Imaging and ART 3360 Intermediate Photography.
In 1992 he received his M.F.A in Photography from the Visual Studies
Workshop (SUNY, Brockport) in Rochester, NY. In 2000, Ortiz won a "New
Photography Award," from En Foco Inc. in New York, which supported
the continuation of the "Disconnection/Reconnection" series.
He was also given the opportunity to exhibit the work in New York in
2001 and to have an image from the series published in the photographic
journal, Nueva Luz in early 2002. Other recent exhibitions include "Salvajes,
Locos, Ninos y Poetas" in Mexico and the "Binational Art Exhibit," in
Paraguay. Ortiz has also participated recently in the exhibitions "Within
Sight" at the Arlington Museum of Art; "The Power of Place:
Contemporary Chicano Artists" at Fine Silver Gallery in San Antonio; "Open
and Closed" at Ball State University in Muncie, IN; "Chicano
Invitational" at Boise State University in Boise, ID and "El
Espejo: Arte Latino" at ArtScan Gallery in Houston. His work has
been shown in web-based exhibitions sponsored by the Mediterranean Foundation
for Art in Italy and the University of Houston's Digital Imaging Forum
(DIF) run by Ed Hill and Suzanne Bloom. In 2002 The Houston Center for
Photography was awarded a NEA grant to present his work in a solo exhibition.
And in 2003 he participated in the Inaugual Exhibition at the Latino
Cultural Center in Dallas, Texas. The exhibition was curated by noted
professionals; Dr. Ybarra-Frausto, Dr. Goldman and Ms. Tere Romo: 333
entries were reviewed and 33 were chosen for the exhibition. Most recently,
Andrew was invited to exhibit his work at the University of the Arts
in Philadelphia in 2004 in a one-person show and has a solo exhibition
scheduled in Tallahassee, FL, at Florida State University in 2006. He
was honored to be included in the two-volume book, Contemporary Chicana
and Chicano Artists, recently published (2002) by Arizona State University.
