Professor Kenda North: Backyard Oasis Exhibition


 

“Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Southern California Photography, 1945-1982”

The photographs of Professor Kenda North are featured in a the exhibition “Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Southern California Photography, 1945-1982” on view at the Palm Springs Art Museum through May 2012.  The exhibition is part of the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time:  Art in L.A. 1945-1980 regional initiative.  Organized by Senior Curator Daniell Cornell, the exhibit traces the development of art and cultural history within thematic groups including The Shape of Desire and Dreams, California Architecture and Design and Hollywood and Celebrity Culture.

The five photographic prints by Professor North are examples of vintage dye transfer prints made from l980 to l983 lent by the artist, the California Museum of Photography and a private collector.

A full color catalog features the 135 images in the exhibition with essays by Daniell Cornell, Tyler Stallings, Jennifer Watts and Robert Stearns.
