SEED 2007 is developing new artists
The public had the opportunity to see the work of talented area high school artists who have been studying this month at The University of Texas at Arlington during a reception Friday, June 29, in the Studio Arts Center, 810 S. Davis Street. The reception was free and open to the public.
This is the second year UT Arlington has presented SEED, a program for high school juniors and seniors in the region interested in art, architecture and design. Strategies, Events, Episodes + Devices = SEED 2007 is a collaboration between the programs in art & art history, chaired by Robert Hower, and the School of Architecture, whose dean is Donald Gatzke. SEED is taught by distinguished members of the faculty and stresses active learning and the development of creativity through the exploration of a variety of art and design media and methods.
Thirty high schools in the region were invited to participate. Week one included a team teaching environment. Students focused on concept development and exploration of sound foundational experiences. Week two is providing students with a choice of five possible studio tracks. Work is being developed to enhance a student's creative vocabulary and portfolio. There is no program cost to participants and all materials are provided, as well as daily lunches.
The New MFA Will Offer Four Concentrations
The Master of Fine Arts is a professional and terminal degree in the practice of art. It requires 60 credit hours and a two to three-year commitment, with artists and designers accepted based on work that demonstrates individuality and artistic promise. The program will accept five to eight students in the first year. Associate Professor Nancy Palmeri is the M.F.A. advisor/coordinator. The four areas of study include: Film/Video/Screenwriting, Glass, Intermedia (expanded studio), and Visual Communication (Graphic Design).
Professor Plummer Retires
The University recognized the contributions and accomplishments of Jack Plummer during a special spring retirement reception. Professor Plummer is now recognized as a Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas Arlington. His contributions to the University and department have been significant over the last 37 years as an administrator, faculty member and colleague. Please email the department if you would like to forward a message to Jack Plummer.
NASAD Report Near Completion
The department of Art and Art History is preparing the initial accreditation document for submission in January 2008. Part of the application is to carefully complete a self-analysis and compare our departmental educational environment to NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) standards. NASAD is an association of approximately 248 schools of art and design, primarily at the college level.
It is the national accrediting agency for art and design and art and design-related disciplines. The accreditation process also includes an on-site review by a team of evaluators and judgment by the NASAD commission, the accreditation decision-making body. The accreditation reviews will focus on educational quality, institutional integrity, and educational improvements.
