The Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) honored Ashley Hall when Hall's commercial was listed in the top ten student commercials. Maraya Lopez and Tammy Bond received International Education Fee Scholarships for the summer intersession course in Italy. Breanna McFarling and Cynthia Johns received scholarships from the Arlington Arts League. Linh Nguyen graduated from UTA in 1996 with a BFA in Ceramics. Mr. Nguyen spent 10 1/2 years at Arlington High School teaching Art I, Ceramics, Art IV, and PALS (a peer mentoring program) and IB (International Baccalaureate) Art for the 2007-2008 academic year. In 2004, Mr. Nguyen was named Arlington High's Teacher of the Year. In December of 2006, he was hired as the Art Coordinator for all art teachers K-12 in the Arlington ISD. University of Texas at Arlington degreed film undergraduate Sharon Palkowetz won the top award, the Platinum Remi, for best direction and art direction at the Worldfest Film Festival in Houston. Palkowetz entered her film titled "Reality Check" in the student classification; however, judges moved it to the professional category in which it received the highest honor. The same film received the Silver Telly Award in another competition. Telly Awards seek to honor outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs. Visiting Instructor Norry Niven, a well known commercial filmmaker and UT Arlington alum who lives in the metroplex, was the instructor for the class. With many thanks to the Student Art Association (SAA) at UT Arlington, Afghan orphans now have art supplies. The SAA, which is sponsored but not funded by the Art and Art History Department, held the Semi-Annual Art Sale in November 2006 to help generate funds for the organization. Instead of keeping all the proceeds, the association chose to donate five percent to buy art supplies for an Afghan orphanage located in Kapul. The Second Annual Undergraduate Art History Symposium was held this past April with keynote speaker, Malcolm Warner, Senior Curator at the Kimbell Art Museum. Art History students from The University of Texas at Arlington, University of North Texas and The University of Texas at Dallas gathered to share their research. The UTA Department of Art and Art History was represented by Emily Clark, Sara Stewart, Dallas Parsons, Cher Mitchell, Martha McLeod, and Elizabeth Hodges. A variety of topics in art were discussed including ancient art, medieval art, religious art and 19th century art in Paris. The symposium was a great success thanks to the Art History Student Union. |
