College of Business - Exporting with the Experts

UTA course opens up opportunities in international exporting internships, certificate and competition with cash award

February 15, 2018 - The University of Texas at Arlington's College of Business is holding a free course for UTA students in international trade that leads to a certificate from the U.S. Department of Commerce and a chance at $2,000 dollars. The signature event, Exporting with the Experts, is being held in partnership with the North Texas District Export Council (DEC).

The program's four sessions will take place through February and March, and will feature business leaders and exporters who will share tried-and-true methods for success in international business. According to management professor Deepak Datta, the UTA program featured the highest enrollment of the Metroplex with 27 students.

Director of North Texas DEC, Jessica M. Gordon, who was also a guest lecturer, highlighted the program's offering to students. "It's a broad career field and after graduating it can be challenging to navigate it since you're exposed to so many different resources on the state and federal government level and you can go into a lot of different specialties." Gordon said. "Given the opportunity to learn about all of these areas, you are exposed to the field and see it's necessary to become an educated specialist to facilitate the navigation into new markets."

Gordon was excited to be a part of the program, since it could be the kick off for many students' careers in international trade. "To do this, you have to understand cultural differences and to be able to integrate and work collaboratively with other nations."

She got her start by attending seminars like Exporting with the Experts while attending the University of Southern Mississippi. "It's good to participate in a program similar to this. In doing so, you have the opportunity to network with large industry players and seek internships."

Upon culmination of the training, students develop and present an export plan for a real-world scenario and company, to introduce a product into a new market. The top two teams will be awarded $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
