Dr. Quick Appointed to Department of Defense Psychological Health Committee

Professor’s Founding Principles of Preventive Stress Management Significant to Military’s Psychological Health Research

(December 12, 2008) Dr. James Campbell Quick, John and Judy Goolsby Distinguished Professor and Professor of Organizational Behavior, has been appointed by approval of Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to the Department of Defense Health Board’s (DHB) Psychological Health External Advisory Subcommittee.

Dr. Quick is in Washington D.C. next week to attend the DHB’s full board meeting. The subcommittee was established earlier this year to bring nationally recognized experts and leaders together to conduct research and scientific reviews, and provide recommendations and findings to the DHB. Dr. Quick is one of 19 appointees chosen among hundreds of nominees.

“It is an honor to be nominated and appointed to the new Psychological Health External Advisory Subcommittee,” said Dr. Quick. “It will be an interesting two-year appointment and a good opportunity to focus on the psychological health of our troops in all the armed services.”

The Department of Defense Health Board provides independent advice and recommendations on matters pertaining to operational programs, policy development and research programs and requirements for the treatment and prevention of disease and injury, the promotion of health and the delivery of efficient, effective and high quality health care services to Department of Defense beneficiaries. The Board and its legacy subcommittees have contributed to numerous, significant advances in the management of disease and injuries among military men and women. Dr. Quick is the co-founder of the preventive stress management concept with more than 30 years of academic research and scholarship activities focusing on organizational stress and the psychological health of executives. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Dr. Quick’s foundational publication, Organizational Stress and Preventive Management, which is currently going into in to its third edition. In 2008 Managing Executive Health: Personal and Corporate Strategies for Sustained Success, co-authored by Quick, was published as was the 6th edition of Organizational Behavior: Science, The Real World, and You, co-authored with Debra L. Nelson. Over the course of his academic career, Dr. Quick has published over 100 books, chapters, journal articles, encyclopedia entries, technical reports and a clinical monograph, some in one or more of 10 international translations.
