The EH&S Office provides Powered Industrial Truck (forklift) Training for UT Arlington employees whose job description requires that they operate these vehicles.

The UT Arlington Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) Training is based on the OSHA Powered Industrial Truck Standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, which states that training shall consist of a combination of formal instruction (e.g., lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, video tape, written material), practical training (demonstrations performed by the trainer and practical exercises performed by the trainee), and evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace. This standard also stipulates that during training, trainees may operate a powered industrial truck only under the direct supervision of persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train operators and to evaluate their competence. For more information regarding this standard visit the OSHA website

It is an OSHA and a UT Arlington requirement that an evaluation of each powered industrial truck operator’s performance shall be conducted at least once every three (3) years. Before attending the practical training, employees must be a valid authorized driver of university vehicles (have a current approved MVR check and completion of Defensive Driving Awareness Course) and also successfully complete the online PIT training course.
