Fire Alarm

All areas of the U.C will begin to evacuate customers and lock their area when a fire alarm sounds.All Departments that have cash drawers or working funds should lockthe funds in the appropriate safe.The following is a specific guide to each area's responsibilities. If you have any questions, please ask your supervisor.

The evacuation procedures for all the three levels of the University Center are:

Lower Level

Multicultural Services / Student Governance/ Student Activities/ Student Development/ International Office/ Student Publications

  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Make certain that the area is locked and leave the building through the nearest exit. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  3. Locate the U.C employee with the building radio.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
Office for Students with Disabilities
  1. All those able to use the stairs should do so to exit and leave the building through the doors across from the Building Supervisor's Office.
  2. Those unable to use the stairs should move to the area at the bottom of the main set of steps (across from the Operations Office). Remain in the area and an employee with a building radio will move to the area.
  3. In the case that evacuation is necessary, assistance will be rendered by the Fire Officials and U.C staff.
Operations 
  1. The Assistant Director University Center Operations, Night Building Supervisor or the Current Building Supervisor will move to the alarm panel to see where the problem area is and will go immediately to that location to evaluate the situation. After it has been determined whether there is a fire, the person listed above will return to the alarm panel and notify the police and the Safety Office. They should remain there until met by the Fire Department or until the alarm panel is reset by the Police or the Safety Office (BUILDING STAFF SHOULD NOT RESET THE ALARM PANEL). They will also update staff via radio regarding the status of the alarm.
  2. The Conference Coordinator, Assistant Director Operations, or the operations Receptionist will take the radio and go to the area at the bottom of the main staircase and stay with any disabled students there (TURN ON THE RADIO BUT DO NOT USE IT).
  3. The Building Supervisor will go to the Upper level and request that any customers using rooms there leave the building. He should lock doors after them if requested to do so. (There are extra radios in the Building Supervisor's Office).
  4. The Maintenance Person should go to the North Foyer Doors with a building radio.
  5. The Lead Building Attendant should go to the East Foyer doors with a building radio.
  6. All other Building Attendants with building radios should assist in asking customers on the Middle Level to exit the building and directing them to the nearest exit.

Middle Level

Double Image 
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Turn on your building radio, BUT DO NOT USE IT. In the case of a bomb threat, the RADIOS CAN DETONATE A REMOTE CONTROL. Wait for a supervisor clearance to use radio.
  3. Make certain that the area is locked according to your supervisors instructions and exit the building through the small loading dock doors. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
The Market 
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Turn on your building radio, BUT DO NOT USE IT. In the case of a bomb threat, the RADIOS CAN DETONATE A REMOTE CONTROL. Wait for a supervisor clearance to use radio.
  3. Make certain that the area is locked according to your supervisors instructions and exit the building through doors next to post office. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
Student Employment 
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Make certain that the area is locked and exit the building through doors next to the post office. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  3. Locate The Market employee with the building radio.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
Post Office/Mail Boxes 
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Make certain that the area is locked and exit the building through the small loading dock doors. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  3. Locate the Double Image employee with the building radio.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
Plaza
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Make certain that the area is locked according to your supervisors instructions and exit the building through the Courtyard doors. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  3. Locate the U.C employee with the building radio.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
Housing Office /Bursar Services&
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Turn on your building radio, BUT DO NOT USE IT. In the case of a bomb threat, theRADIOS CAN DETONATE A REMOTE CONTROL. Wait for a supervisor clearance to use radio.
  3. Make certain that the area is locked and exit the building through the doors across from the office. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
Bowling and Billiards
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Turn on your building radio, BUT DO NOT USE IT. In the case of a bomb threat, the RADIOS CAN DETONATE A REMOTE CONTROL. Wait for a supervisor clearance to use radio.
  3. Make certain that the area is locked according to your supervisors instructions and exit the building through the doors across from Bowling and Billiards. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
Kitchen Area
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Turn on your building radio, BUT DO NOT USE IT. In the case of a bomb threat, the RADIOS CAN DETONATE A REMOTE CONTROL. Wait for a supervisor clearance to use radio.
  3. Make certain that the area is locked according to your supervisors instructions and exit the building through the back doors. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  4. Locate the U.C employee with the building radio.
  5. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  6. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
Connection Cafe
  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Turn on your building radio, BUT DO NOT USE IT. In the case of a bomb threat, the;RADIOS CAN DETONATE A REMOTE CONTROL. Wait for a supervisor clearance to use radio.
  3. Make certain that the area is locked according to your supervisors instructions and exit the building through the East Foyer doors. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  4. Locate the U.C employee with the building radio.
  5. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  6. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.

Upper Level

CMC/CMAS

  1. Ask customers to leave your area and direct them to the nearest building exit.
  2. Make certain that the area is locked and leave the building through the nearest exit. Once outside, move away from the building and encourage others to do so.
  3. Find the U.C employee with the Building Radio.
  4. Inform anyone trying to enter the building that the fire alarm has sounded and ask them not to enter.
  5. After the 'all clear' has been announced over the radio by the Building Supervisor, return to your area and resume operation.
