Spring 2014 Signature Events

January 26th – February 1st
Event: Cervical and Testicular Awareness Day (HS)
Where: Palo Duro, UC
When: Monday, January 27th 2014
Time: 10:00 – 2:00 pm
Description:  This event will highlight screening methods and services available to be more aware of how these types of cancers are effecting the college population. There will be demonstrations and information from health services and partnering vendors.

February 2nd – February 8th
Event: Food For Thought: “Nutrition 101 – Understanding the Basics of Nutrition” (CR)
Where: MAC 213 (upstairs Classroom)
When: Wednesday, February 5th 2014
Time: 12:00-1:00 pm
Description: This session will give you a chance to cover the basics of nutrition, so that you can make informed decisions about what you eat.  We get bombarded with nutrition information, but what is the real info that we need to know?  We’ll look at the main components of what we eat - carbohydrates, fats, and protein.   You’ll learn why we need each of these nutrients, how much we need, and what we should look for when choosing foods with these nutrients.  We’ll also talk about what we should try to incorporate into our meals and snacks throughout the day so that we give our bodies the fuel they need to be at their best and healthiest. 

February 9th – February 15th
Event: Safe Sex in the City (HR)
Where: Palo Duro, UC
When:  Thursday, February 13th 2014
Time: 10:00 – 2:00 pm
Description: This event is right before Valentine’s Day and it reminds students to practice safe sex and to be more aware of the STI’s that are out there. 

February 16th – February 22nd 
Event: MAVS Talk Emotional Health Screening Event 
Where: MAC Upstairs Lounge & 213 (upstairs classroom) 
When:  Thursday, February 20th 2014 
Time: 2p-5p 
Description:  Learn about emotional health and how to recognize an emotional health problem. Take a free emotional health or substance abuse screening and meet with counselor one-on-one for interpretation.

February 23rd – March 1st
Event: Polar Bear Plunge
Where:  Outdoor Pool (Physical Education Building)
When:  Wednesday, February 26th 2014
Time: 8:00 pm
Description:  Take a plunge into the freezing temperatures in the outdoor pool as we raise awareness for the Aquatics program on campus.

March 2nd – March 8th
Event: SHAC Health Fair (HS)
Where: Bluebonnet, UC
When:  Tuesday, March 4th 2014
Time: 10:00 – 2:00 pm
Description: This event allows students to get free health screenings and overall wellness checks and information on how to live a healthier Lifestyle. It also allows students to have fun while learning about their health needs and sun safety before Spring break. 

March 9th – March 15th
Spring Break:  This week will be a freebee.  Everyone currently signed up will get one event credit for this week.  Everyone be safe and enjoy the break!  

March 16th – March 22nd
Event: MAVS Talk Self-Compassion-Preston Hall Series
Where: Preston Hall, Room 104
When:  Tuesday, March 18th 2014
Time: 2:30 – 3:30 pm
Description: Learn aspects of self-compassion and how to be more accepting of yourself. 

March 23rd – March 29th
Event: MAVS Talk Stress-MAC Series
Where: MAC 213 (upstairs classroom)
When:  Thursday, March 27th 2014
Time: 3:30 – 4:30 pm
Description: Learn techniques to manage stress. 

March 30th – April 5th
Event: Food For Thought: “Nagging Bodily Pains as a Result of Muscular Imbalances and Simple Exercises to Correct these Conditions” (CR)
Where: MAC 213 (upstairs classroom)
When:  Wednesday, April 2nd 2014
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 pm
Description: The lecture is a look into human posture and some bodily imperfections that can emerge over a lifetime.  The discussion also will inform the attendees of possible injuries or pains which can be a result of these muscular flaws and descriptions of each of these issues.  In depth examples of exercises and their form, which are used to assist in the correction of muscular imbalances, will be examined to finalize the lecture.   

April 6th – April 12th
Event: MAVS Talk Anger-MAC Series
Where: MAC 213 (upstairs classroom)
When:  Thursday, April 10th 2014
Time: 3:30 – 4:30 pm
Description: Examine normal and problematic anger and learn healthy ways to resolve conflict. 

April 13th – April 19th
Event: Block Party
Where: UC/Centennial Mall
When: Thursday, April 17th 2014
Time:  6:00 – 11:00 pm
Description: Co-sponsored by University Events and Apartment and residence life, The Block Party provides an end of year celebration for on-campus and commuter students alike. The event includes live music, carnival-style treats, games, and activities galore such as an obstacle course, wax hands, video game truck and photo booth. 

April 20th – April 26th
Event: MAVS Talk Anxiety and Academics-MAC Series
Where: MAC 213 (upstairs classroom)
When:  Thursday, April 24th 2014
Time: 3:30 – 4:30 pm
Description: Learn how to reduce anxiety and test anxiety. 

April 27th – May 3rd
Event:  Mindful Moments
Where:  Ransom Hall, Room 310
When:  Monday, April 28th 2014
Time: 12:15 – 12:45 pm
Description:  Learn and practice mindfulness techniques to help deal with stress effectively. 

May 4th – May 10th (FINALS/BONUS Week)*
Event: Food For Thought: “Play Filled Living”
Where: MAC 213 (upstairs classroom)
When:  Wednesday, May 7th 2014
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 pm
Description: How can we add more play into our lives?  Watch a kid make a sand castle, or paint a picture and notice their willingness to create without rules, design without limitations, and build without expectations.  Choosing to add playtime into our lives is a key ingredient to creating a life of your own. A life designed for and by you, and magnificently lived.
*For those that may need a boost to get you to 5 events, this week is bonus week and will allow you to get an extra one event credit for the semester.
