HOW DO I GET ADVISING?

There are 3 ways to get advising: Simple Questions, Express Advising, and Advising Appointments.

SIMPLE QUESTIONS (Live Chat)

  • Click on the Live Chat widget in the bottom right of this page.
  • Questions are answered in the order received.
  • Sample simple questions:
    • When does registration begin for next semester?
    • When is last day to drop a class?  

EXPRESS ADVISING (Walk-in *limited)

  • For topics such as elective options, GPA issues, transfer credits, core curriculum requirements, or a comprehensive academic review, a student should book an appointment instead of using Express Advising. 
  • Express advising in-person is offered 3-5 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays** and is limited to 10 minutes in length per student.
  • Check in at the CAPPA front desk with your name, student #, level/program, and question/issue. 
  • If an advisor is not available during Express Advising hours due to a high volume of submissions, you will be contacted by UTA email or phone when the advisor is next available.
**Express Advising is unavailable when Peak Advising is in effect, please see Simple Questions 

Peak Advising Dates:

  • Mid-October thru Early-December
  • Mid-March through Early-May

ADVISING APPOINTMENTS

Click on the appropriate program area and use the Bookings site to make your appointment. After hours appointments for Tuesdays and Thursday 5-6 pm are available, but they need to be scheduled through Bookings the day before.

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS AND RESOURCES

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR ADVISING?

  • Familiarize yourself with your degree requirements, course prerequisites, deadlines, policies, and procedures.
  • Make an appointment prior to course registration.
  • Remember to cancel the appointment if you cannot attend.
  • Develop a potential schedule and create a list of questions to review with your advisor.
  • Ask your advisor for information about campus resources and opportunities in your areas of interest.
  • Students must meet with your advisor every semester to be cleared to register. Freshman and students on academic probation will need to meet with an advisor quarterly. Upper-class students should meet with an advisor at least once a year to make sure you are on target for graduation.
  • Keep copies of your academic records, transcripts, and planning materials.
  • Verify with an advisor the information you hear through the grapevine.
  • Accept responsibility for your own decisions!

WHAT IS MY ADVISOR’S ROLE?

  • To provide you with accurate, up-to-date information about the University’s programs, policies, and procedures.
  • To assist you in developing an educational plan that takes into consideration your academic background, course prerequisites, and career plans.
  • To guide you so that you may take advantage of the wide variety of services and educational opportunities that are offered by UTA.
  • To periodically evaluate your progress toward your academic goals.
  • To offer advising assistance when academic difficulties arise.
  • To allow convenient access to advising services through scheduled appointments.
  • To answer questions clarifying transfer credits and if appropriate, initiate the process to have transfer courses re-evaluated.
  • To keep a detailed record of issues discussed during advising appointments and follow-up with you in a timely manner on issues not resolved during your appointment.
