Dr. Malaia received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Purdue University. She has taught and conducted research in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Departments at Purdue and Indiana Universities. She began teaching at UT Arlington in the Fall of 2011.

Service Learning Class

Service-Learning Class:  EDUC 5368: CAPSTONE RESEARCH COURSE. This course supports practical implementation of student-driven research projects, addressing practical components of research process: data collection, data analysis, preparation of abstracts, preparation of posters, presentations, figures of publication, and manuscripts. We will also focus on empowering women as research practitioners outside of university environment.

Academic Outcomes

  • Students will implement the research project based on the proposal written in EDUC 5367.
  • Students will increase their confidence in doing research.
  • Students will use their findings to inform the community about their research.
  • Students will submit the written reports for their projects to peer-reviewed outlets: conferences (abstracts), journals, etc.

Service Learning Project

  • Presentation of music therapy for kids with autism spectrum disorders at Fort Worth Museum of Science and Industry, with museum open special early hours only for families with ASD kids.
  • Research on the use of recipes and healthy food guides in the museum space for children.
  • Educational workshops for teachers, topics: traumatic brain injury; mental health and depression in teens.
  • Assessments of effectiveness of specific teaching methodologies in schools.
  • Assessments of effectiveness of specific learning strategies in schools.
  • Development of strategy-based training to improve use of working memory.
