Dr. Hanks is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch with a BSN, MSN, and PhD. Robert has published several articles on advocacy including an explanatory model for nurses titled: The Sphere of Nursing Advocacy. In addition, he has published a concept analysis Barriers to Nursing Advocacy: A Concept Analysis and results from a pilot qualitative study The Lived Experience of Nursing Advocacy: A Descriptive Pilot Study. His dissertation research includes testing of an author developed instrument Protective Nurse Advocacy Scale to measure protective nursing advocacy among nurses. His ongoing research includes social advocacy and community health nursing.

Course Description: Integrates knowledge from nursing theory and public health science in assessing health care needs of aggregates, communities, and society.
Academic Outcomes
- Apply core professional values (health promotion, prevention of illness and injury, partnership, respect for the environment, respect for diversity, and advocacy) and roles within CHN/PHN.
- Demonstrate knowledge of culture, environmental health, and health care access in CHN.
- Perform a community assessment for a target population.
- Collaborate with a community health nurse/professional in a community agency that serves a selected target pop.
- Integrate assessment findings, theory and research in the delivery of care to a selected target population.
- Develop a method of evaluation for community nursing interventions.

Description
Each student will develop a community health related intervention based on a community assessment, diagnosis, and agency approval that will benefit the agency and community using service learning.
