Carolyn A. Barros Award
“Service Learning is a teaching method that promotes student learning through active participation in meaningful and planned service experiences in the community that are directly related to course content. Through reflective activities, students enhance their understanding of course content, general know/edge, sense of civic responsibility, self-awareness and commitment (Crews, 1995).”
Purpose
The Carolyn A. Barros Service-Learning Award celebrates the commitment our students have made to the betterment of their communities and the enrichment of their learning experience inside and outside the classroom. This award recognizes initiative, achievement and excellence of students involved in service learning at UT Arlington.
Award
Two honorees will each be awarded a $200 scholarship and a plaque. Students receiving the Carolyn A. Barros Service-Learning Award will be recognized at the President’s Convocation for Academic Excellence in Spring 2012.
Criteria for Selection
- 2.5 GPA
- Undergraduate Classification
- Minimum 9-semester hour load at UT Arlington
- Minimum of 15 community service hours completed within UT Arlington service-learning courses (a service-learning course or academic course with a service-learning component)
- Exemplary service-learning experience(s) in UT Arlington service-learning course(s) completed in Spring 2011 or Fall 2011.
Selection Committee
The selection committee will consist of service-learning faculty, a community-based organization representative, a CCSL Advisory Committee member, and a student representative.
Procedures
Nominations may be made by academic deans and chairs or the faculty member teaching the student nominee in a service-learning course or academic course with a service learning component. A one-page narrative (500 words or less) is required to indicate why you believe the nominee should be selected to receive the Carolyn A. Barros Service-Learning Award. Please include contact information for your nominee (E-mail and phone). The CCSL will contact the student nominee for further information.
Student Nominee Submission
Student nominees will be asked to submit a statement addressing the following questions:
- Describe your history of community service involvement and your UTA service-learning experience(s).
- How has your service-learning experience impacted the individual(s), community and/or agency with which you served, and what has been the resulting impact it made on you?
The student nominee must include a letter of support from the community based-organization that served as the service-learning placement site. Paid work experiences and internships will not be considered.

2011 Faculty Award
Nilakshi Veerabathina, physics lecturer at UT Arlington since 2005, won the 2011 UT Arlington Faculty Service-Learning award, for "innovations in engaged scholarship that integrate service learning into the curriculum".
