Aberg Center is an educational hub which focuses on improving lives and bettering the community through education. Adult learners come to Aberg Center to take classes in intermediate and advanced English or GED preparation. By studying reading, writing, and conversation, students strengthen their ability to communicate with those around them and can better advocate for their families’ needs. The learning environment at Aberg Center fosters not only literacy, but also connection to the community.
Service opportunities are available in Spring 2012 for students interested in gaining hands-on experience with ESL education, children’s literacy, health and nutrition literacy, event planning, marketing/communications, and more. Volunteers must attend an orientation session and will be required to authorize a background check if they will be working with children.

AIDS Interfaith Dallas is a multicultural, community-based, non-profit service organization whose programs are designed to meet the practical, emotional, and spiritual needs of persons living with HIV/AIDS. The program provides services for persons living with HIV/AIDS, gives support to the people who care for them, and educates people who are at-risk in order to intervene in the spread of HIV. AIDS Outreach Center (AOC) is the largest AIDS Service Organization in Tarrant and eight surrounding rural counties educating the public about HIV/AIDS, providing social services, and acting as the voice of men, women and children living with HIV. AOC offers the greater community and people with HIV the following programs: HIV Prevention and Community Education, Medical Case and Treatment Management, Mental Health Counseling, Nutritional Support and Nutritional Counseling, Legal Services, Health Insurance Assistance, Housing and Transportation Assistance, Group Support, and Youth Services. Case management services are also provided to assist clients in obtaining resources and services to meet critical social needs not met by AOC by helping clients to have sufficient services to live safe, healthy, and more independent lives.

The Alzheimer’s Association – North Central Texas Chapter is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting Alzheimer patients and their families through support programs, education, public awareness, advocacy and research. Our case management program provides help for clients to make informed decisions concerning care and help arrange services needed by the client. Other services include the telephone help-line, monthly education programs, information and referral, and Medic Alert +Safe Return program, which is an identification program for patients who wander and become lost.

The Arlington Goodtimes Chorus is a Men’s Barbershop Chorus. We’ve been around for many years, spreading four part harmony and good times in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. We welcome men who would like to sing. It is not necessary to have a wonderful voice (although that would be nice) or to have years of choral experience. You should be enthusiastic and able to carry a tune. We meet each Tuesday evening at Epworth United Methodist Church in Arlington at 1400 South Cooper Street.
No training is required.

Arlington ISD’s ACE is a before and afterschool program for students in K-12th grades. The goals of the program include graduating and preparing all students for post secondary or workforce readiness; reduction of the dropout rate; improvement in academic performance, attendance, and behavior; and overall improvement of grade promotion and graduation. The program consists of four components: Academic Assistance, Academic Enrichment, Family and Parental Support Services, and College/Workforce Readiness. Fifteen schools are currently offering the program including 5 elementary, 8 junior highs, and 2 high schools. ACE is looking for volunteers to provide homework assistance, tutoring, and to teach project based learning including cooking, dance, forensics, gardening, financial planning/banking as well as a whole host of other possibilities.
Programming is also provided on Saturdays.

The Arlington Night Shelter provides, shelter, meals and rehabilitative services for homeless men, women and families. The program emphasis is assisting clients to become self-sufficient through case management services, structured employment programs, and mandatory classes four days per week focusing on life and job skills.

Arlington Reads is a multi-faced literacy program that meets the literacy needs of multiple groups of people, from adult learners to children. Arlington Reads provides homework help for grades 1-3 and programming for adult learners that need adult basic education (ABE), English as a second language (ESL), and general education development (GED) services. Those interested in volunteering as a tutor with Arlington Reads will need to do a background check with the city of Arlington, and complete a training session with an Arlington Reads staff member. Arlington Urban Ministries (AUM) provides emergency financial assistance to Arlington’s families in crisis. We make direct payments to landlords, utility providers, and pharmacies on behalf of the families we serve. Additionally, we maintain a community food pantry and clothing closet to provide families and homeless people with 1-2 days worth of food/clothing. We also maintain relationships with an extensive list of aid agencies in Arlington to refer families to whom require assistance beyond what AUM can provide.
The following projects are Ongoing/Training Needed – contact Lisa.
Mission Case Manager – meet with families in crisis at the Mission Office, determine their needs, make pledge to pay 1 bill/rent, provide food (if needed) refer to other agencies in the community for additional help. Preference is given to Social Work students needing capstone activity, or mature students with experience working with low-income families.
Front Office Assistant – greet families, triage according to their needs, provide emergency groceries, assist with phone calls.
Food Pantry Assistant – stock, organize, bag groceries, and monitor needs of emergency food pantry.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) enriches, encourages, and empowers children to reach their highest potential through safe, positive mentoring relationships. Independent research demonstrates that the agency’s model of one-to-one relationships has a direct and measurable impact on the children served. This proven success in creating safe, positive friendships translates into more confident children, healthier families, and stronger communities. Children are enrolled in the program from ages 7-14 and can continue in the program until high school graduation. Big Brothers and Big Sisters come from a variety of backgrounds and range in age from high school seniors to senior citizens; Bigs are asked to commit one year to be matched with a child.
For some volunteer opportunities a criminal background check, driving record check, interview, and/or training may be required. Some duties may be limited to students with an undergraduate degree in a particular subject matter. Requirements will vary by opportunities available and BBBS reserves the right to change or update these requirements at any time.

Camp Summit is a year-round facility, offering one-week sessions in the summer and weekend sessions in the spring and fall, for children, youth, and adults who are physically challenged, developmentally delayed, or dual sensory impaired or who have multiple disabilities. Campers are encouraged to try new experiences in order to gain self-confidence, learn cooperation and communication, and increase personal independence in a safe and fun environment. The focus of the camp is on individual growth through accomplishing a variety of goals at levels specific to each individual’s needs, capabilities, and potential.

We need students who would like to volunteer with international refugees that are resettled in the Fort Worth area. We could use students to teach ESL, job readiness, health and hygiene, or cultural orientation classes for our refugees. Volunteers can also tutor refugee children or organize a donations drive and then distribute the donated goods to the refugees. Additionally, students who are fluent in a current refugee language, such as Burmese, Chin, Karen, Kirundi, Nepali, or Arabic, are greatly needed to serve as volunteer interpreters.
A volunteer application and criminal background check are required for all volunteers. If a volunteer plans to continue working with our refugees after the semester is completed, they will need to take a TB skin test. We provide volunteer orientations to all new volunteers working with our refugees.

Another part of our organization is the Center for Creative Living School and Child Care Center. Volunteers needed for the school and child care to participate with the teacher in a class by listening to children read, playing games, preparing materials for the teacher. CASA of Tarrant County (Child Advocates) provides trained, court-appointed volunteers to serve as court advocates for children in child abuse and neglect cases who have been placed in foster care. Volunteers will serve as independent voices in court on behalf of abused and neglected children’s best interests and in pursuit of safe, permanent homes. The volunteer will work with all parties involved in the assigned case and visit the child regularly.
Volunteer training required (30 hours). A one year commitment is needed due to nature of each case.

Communities In Schools (CIS) is a private, nonprofit dropout prevention program. Since 1985, CIS has provided year-round, on-campus academic and social support services to at-risk students and their families. Our team of social workers are experts in providing comprehensive case-managed services and bringing community resources into schools to help students and families in need. CIS currently provides services to students in nearly 60 public schools in 10 school districts across the Dallas region. It is the largest stay-in-school network in the nation, and is the leading program of its kind.
Some of the volunteer opportunities through CIS are:
Mentor: Serve as a positive role model, and a caring and compassionate sounding board for personal, academic, and professional life choices one hour per week working one-on-one with an at-risk student.
Tutor: Assist students one-on-one in their academic areas of need. Tutors are needed for once-weekly, one-hour sessions as well as small group sessions.
Clubs & Student Organization Sponsor: Lead groups of students as a club or student organization sponsor! Tap into your talents and interests. What can you share that will help shape developing young minds? Some club ideas include: Skateboarding Club, Extreme Sports Club, Photography Club, Gamers Club, Step Team, and more!!!

Girls Incorporated of Tarrant County inspires all girls to become strong, smart and bold. Girls Inc. provides after-school and summer childcare for youth ages 5-12. Helping Restore Ability’s mission is to educate and advocate, enrich and empower people of all ages with disabilities. We serve people with all type of disabilities, regardless of whether they were born with a disability or acquire one later in life through accident or illness. HRA client managed attendant services help people, including children, with various physical disabilities choose their assistant(s) from applicants provided by HRA. The clients establish their own assistant’s schedule and supervise all aspects of the services and the services may take place at home, in school, or at the workplace. We also have two day habilitation programs for adults with developmental disabilities in Arlington. HRA trains, manages payroll and monitors for quality and changing needs.

Volunteer ombudsmen advocate for quality care of residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. They investigate and resolve complaints, educate about resident rights and support resident and family councils. Ombudsmen are sometimes the only regular visitors these people see. Ombudsmen are expected to visit their homes at least 2 hours a week. During these visits, ombudsmen meet with residents, families, and staff to resolve complaints and concerns and report compliments.
Volunteer training is required. Ombudsmen receive 36 hours of training. Upon completion of training, ombudsmen are certified through the DADS and assigned to one or more facilities. Each volunteer is supervised by a staff ombudsman

The Salvation Army Family Life Shelter is a program designed to help stabilize homeless families and teach them the necessary skills to live independently in the community. Basic needs such as food, shelter and childcare are provided, while independent living skills are taught through educational workshops, counseling, and community resource networking.
The Salvation Army of Arlington is a neighborhood center for worship, education, recreation, music and community activity. The center provides after-school and summer youth programs for children of all ages. Youth activities include indoor/outdoor games and arts and crafts that are all supervised by adults. The Army’s Creative Arts Program seeks to provide performing Arts education to children in need (brass, guitar, vocal, and dramatic instruction). This center is located at 712 W. Abram Street.

The Tarrant County Juvenile Services is provided at the direction of the Tarrant County Juvenile Board and the Juvenile Court, to address the prevention of delinquent conduct and provide for the care and rehabilitation of children (10-16) within its jurisdiction. Tarrant County Juvenile Services has developed a range of community and home-based programs as additional options in solving the problem of juvenile crime. Services provided include screening and diversion of cases to community resources, presenting objective reports to the court for use at disposition, executing court-ordered treatment and supervision, administrating community corrections programs, securing alternative placement and administering collection of court-ordered probation fees and restitution. Services to victims of juvenile crime are also provided.

The YWCA currently focuses on the needs of economically disadvantaged women and children with the following programs:
My Own Place – This program provides housing, counseling, case management and a mentor program to create a bridge to independence for young women who have aged out of the foster care system or are otherwise homeless.
Supportive Living – This program provides safe housing, case management, lifeskills class, crisis intervention and job readiness classes for transitionally homeless women giving each participant the opportunity to work toward self-sufficiency with dignity.
