Civil Engineering includes the planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of structures to suit human needs. Some of the numerous subdivisions are Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering (e.g., solid/hazardous waste, air quality, water quality), Infrastructure Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering (e.g., formation, landfill, ground improvement), Transportation Engineering (e.g., traffic, highways, pavements); Structures (e.g., buildings, bridges, tunnels), and Water Resources (e.g., river control, irrigation, water supply, and sewage collection). Civil engineers are the principal designers, constructors, operators, and caretakers of many of the constructed facilities and systems that contribute to the high quality of life enjoyed in the United States.
The Department of Civil Engineering (CE) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UT Arlington) is located at the center of the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Metroplex, the largest non-port metropolitan area in the U.S. It is the only Civil Engineering program at a public university in the DFW region, offering ample employment opportunities for Civil Engineering graduates. The Department is part of the UT Arlington's College of Engineering, one of the largest engineering colleges in Texas. The University, located on a modern 388-acre campus, is one of the largest campuses in The University of Texas System with an enrollment of over 32,000. The CE department is located in Nedderman Hall, the Engineering Laboratory Building and the recently opened Civil Engineering laboratory Building. The Department is one of the fastest growing departments in the College of Engineering with 21 full-time faculty members and 621 students. The Department provides a stimulating study and research atmosphere for both students and faculty. The Engineering facilities provide state of the art laboratories, class rooms and computing facilities for our students.
The Department offers B.S., M.S., M.E and Ph.D. degrees. The undergraduate Civil Engineering program, which is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, requires courses in all areas of Civil Engineering. However, the curriculum offers flexibility to students by allowing course selection choices in several sub-disciplines of CE. We offer courses in six broad technical areas: construction engineering and management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering and mechanics, transportation engineering and water resources engineering. Master's students can pursue either a thesis option or a non-thesis option. Teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships are available to qualified students. The faculty and graduate students are active in a wide variety of research projects with both internal and external funding. We have an excellent student body and highly competent and dedicated faculty. Our graduates are educated to handle the challenges of a professional engineering career. All of our students have a personal faculty advisor to help them plan their academic program.
