Areas of Expertise:


Structural engineering; concrete and timber bridge design, evaluation and rehabilitation; concrete properties; infrastructure disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery; engineering education.

Background:

Dr. Yazdani is well known for his research on hazard mitigation of coastal construction and concrete/timber bridge design and repair. Examples of his notable research include the in-home hurricane shelter technology, concrete bridge technology, utilization of steel fibers in post-tensioned concrete bridges, and enhancing concrete properties for bridge application.

Professional experience:

During his career, Dr. Yazdani has received numerous awards for his teaching and research abilities and has secured more than $8 million from externally-funded research projects, on most of which he is/was the principal investigator. Funding sources have included a variety of federal, state and local entities, such as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), U. S. department of Transportation (USDOT), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U. S. Army, U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Ocean & Atmospheric Association (NOAA), Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), and the Sea Grant program. Under his conception and leadership, the Center for Infrastructure Hazards was established at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

Dr. Yazdani serves or served on the editorial board of the ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering, on the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) panels and on the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology. He received the prestigious 2005 Davis Productivity Award from the State of Florida. A Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and a registered professional engineer, Dr. Yazdani is the author or co-author of numerous articles published in well-known professional journals, and an invited speaker at conferences and seminars.

Dr. Yazdani has been very active in national societies such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He is a past president of the ASCE Tallahassee Branch, and the current Chairman of ACI-SEI Joint Committee on Concrete Bridge Design. Dr. Yazdani has organized many technical sessions at national/international conferences. A leader in engineering education, he is an ABET Program Evaluator, and has chaired several committees dealing with graduate, curriculum and fundraising activities. Dr. Yazdani is also an active consultant to several government and private entities.
