Education:

Ph.D., 2002, North Carolina State University - Raleigh
M.Engg., 1997, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok , Thailand
B.Tech., 1994, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, India

Areas of Expertise:

Landfill and Brownfields, Contaminated Site Characterization and Remediation, Numerical Modeling in Geotechnics, Excavation Support System, Deep Foundations and Reliability based Designs (LRFD), Embankments and Levees

Background:

Dr Hossain received his bachelors degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India in 1994 and Masters degree in Geotechnical Engineering from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand, in 1997. He received his PhD degree in Geoenvironmental Engineering from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 2002.

He worked as a Civil/Geotechnical engineer in Bangladesh, Thailand, and Singapore for three years before moving to USA to pursue his Ph.D. His working experiences in these countries includes foundation analysis and design for building and bridge, excavation support system and retaining structures, cut and cover tunneling, and slope stability analysis. He worked extensively in design and construction of drilled shaft, contiguous bored pile wall, secant pile wall and diaphragm wall. During his Ph.D. at NC State university he worked on two projects with North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) related to Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for driven piles and Numerical Modeling of Embankment on Soft Ground with Pile Foundation by using Finite Difference Program FLAC. Dr. Hossain has worked on Mechanics of Compressibility and Shear Strength of Municipal Solid Waste for Bioreactor Landfill for his Ph.D. work. His research linked the mechanistically measured parameters to the physical and biological changes that take place as waste decomposition is accelerated in bioreactor landfill.

Prior to Joining UTA, Dr. Hossain worked as a geotechnical engineer with URS Corporations during September 2002 to August 2003 and as a senior geotechnical engineer with Schnabel Engineering during September 2003 to August 20004 at Gaithersburg, Maryland. His experience includes work with various numerical analysis and design tools including the Finite Element Program PLAXIS, the Finite Difference Program FLAC, L-PILE, DRIVEN, ct-SHORING, gINT, STABL, and few other geotechnical programs. He has published several articles including ASCE Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering Journal, Transportation Research Board Conferences, and International Conferences on Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Related Topics, and Waste Technology Conferences. He is currently a member of ASCE, TRB Physiochemical Phenomena of Soils Committee, and TRB Geotechnical Modeling Committee.

He is a licensed civil engineer in the states of Ohio, Maryland and Texas.
