The Air & Waste Management Association (AWMA) awarded Sonia Samir, Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering, the Richard Stessel Memorial Scholarship in recognition of her academic excellence and professionalism. The Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan professional organization that enhances knowledge and expertise by providing a neutral forum for information exchange, professional development, networking opportunities, public education, and outreach to more than 5,000 environmental professionals in 65 countries. A&WMA promotes global environmental responsibility and increases the effectiveness of organizations to make critical decisions that benefit society. A primary goal of the Air & Waste Management Association is to foster educational activities in the areas of air quality, waste management, and environmental management, policy and law. Sonia Samir, is currently working on her PhD dissertation entitled "Estimation of Fugitive Emission and Efficiency of Gas Collection System for An Enhanced Leachate Recirculation (ELR) Landfill." Sonia is investigating fugitive methane emission through landfill covers and developing a model to predict future fugitive methane emission. She will also investigate the efficiency of gas collection systems for the ELR landfill in Denton, Texas. Sonia is working with Dr. Sahadat Hossain for her research and her research work is sponsored by the City of Denton, Texas.
