The UTA Graduate Student Chapter (GSC) of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) held its first meeting and election on Friday, September 6, 2013. The presence of a good number of structural engineering graduate students as well as faculties of structural engineering made the meeting a success. The students elected four student officers for the proper functioning of the chapter. The Office Bearers are - Md. Istiaque Hasan (President); Alireza Sayah (Vice-President); Preeti Shrestha (Secretary) and Hemachand Pallempati (Treasurer). CE professor and SEI fellow Dr. Nur Yazdani is serving as the faculty advisor to the chapter.
CE Chairman Dr. Ali Abolmaali appreciated the forming of the chapter and pledged support from the department. The UTA GSC is the third SEI student chapter to be formed since SEI undertook this initiative earlier this year. The chapter will work on enhancing the education of CE structural students by arranging lectures, webinars, field trips, and outreach activities. It will also work on building network with structural engineering professionals both on local and national levels to make a smooth transition from college to career. The GSC team at UTA is now looking forward to starting its activities under SEI brand name and its next programs will be undertaken soon.
