Dr. Abolmaali and Dr. Ramirez received a research grant to develop a test set-up for full-scale structural testing of railway ties based on the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) standards and specifications. The test set-up is operational at the Civil Engineering Laboratory Building (CELB).

This specific test set-up will be used to conduct research on the railway ties based on AREMA standards with different materials such as prestressed concrete and wood. Particularly, research will be conducted to study the feasibility of the use of fiber reinforced concrete and shredded-tire-reinforced concrete in the railway ties.
