Thank
you for visiting the Department of Civil Engineering's home on the Web.
Through these web pages, you will get to know our creative students,
our innovative programs, our distinguished faculty, and the
contributions that we are making towards the advancement and
modernization of civil engineering.
We have 19 full-time faculty
members who are actively engaged in teaching, research and professional
service. There are also 15 part-time faculty members who are local
professionals. Our faculty members teach more than 65 courses in the
different areas of Civil Engineering. The Department is served by seven
dedicated support staff members. In the Fall Semester of 2008, the CE
Department had 295 undergraduate, 118 masters and 48 doctoral students.
Graduates of the program have excelled in their careers, many of whom
hold positions of leadership and high responsibility in public and
private sectors. The Department's well-recognized faculty is engaged in
practical and useful research across the various areas of CE, with
research sponsored by government and industry.
The CE Department
at UT Arlington is in an upward momentum The student enrollment
increased by 20% over the last two years, and external research funding
by about 100%. This reflects the excellent job market in the public and
private sectors for CE graduates, the perceived employment security and
the long-term prognosis for CE to continue to be a profession in high
demand. New initiatives with the significant industrial base in the DFW
metroplex are being pursued. Further expansion of the undergraduate and
the graduate programs are being explored. Innovative student curricula
and career advising strategies are being developed and implemented.
Multi-disciplinary research/education centers in areas of
national/international critical needs are being established. One of
these is the proposed UT Arlington Center for Structural Engineering
Research (CSER), the largest structural testing facility in the nation
with the capability to test several full size building and bridge
components simultaneously for various probable loading conditions. The
UT System recently approved a $25 million funding for CSER
construction. A new 25,000 sq. ft. Departmental laboratory building on
the west campus was opened in the summer of 2008. In this process, the
Department hopes to significantly contribute towards UT Arlington’s
efforts to bring a Tier 1 university status to the DFW and north Texas
area. During this unprecedented expansion, the CE Department is firmly
committed to maintaining high levels of teaching and service excellence
simultaneously with significant growth in research efforts.
We
are very excited to be a part of this dynamic, expanding and quality
environment. I invite you to explore further our web site, and to
contact me if you have any questions or comments.
