Graduate Assistantships

Teaching and research assistantships and research fellowships are available to qualified students. Most students in their first year serve as teaching assistants or graduate teacher's aids. This requires about 12 hours per week in teaching undergraduate laboratories or assisting in laboratory preparations. Well-qualified applicants may be offered research assistantships the first year.

During subsequent years students are usually supported either as research assistants, research fellows or as teaching assistants and are expected to devote their time outside of class to the dissertation or thesis research project.

Assistantships start at $19,000 per year plus added benefits of approximately $2,770 to $5,700 per year for fringe benefits, including an excellent insurance package.

Especially well-qualified students are eligible for significantly higher stipends. During the time spent in internship the stipend is usually greater than that for a teaching or research assistantship.
