PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS FAQ'S

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

The College of Education at The University of Texas at Arlington offers a variety of programs at the graduate level for individuals seeking to extend their knowledge beyond their Bachelor's degree. Individuals interested in pursuing teacher certification that have previously received a Bachelor's degree are no longer eligible to obtain teacher certification at the undergraduate level.  They must complete a post-baccalaureate teacher prep program.  If they wish they may obtain a Master's of Education in Teaching along with certification, but it is not required. Teachers who are currently certified may wish to pursue a master's degree, additional endorsements or certification as a principal or superintendent. All of these programs are offered at the graduate level.

Minimum requirements for all College of Education Graduate Programs include a conferred bachelor's degree and a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of that degree. A 3.0 is also required in any previous graduate work that has been completed. If the degree was conferred outside the US in a non-English speaking institution you must also submit TOEFL scores (IBT minimum in Speaking 26).

All individuals who are applying for a Master's degree must submit 3 letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose to the College of Education. They must also submit GRE scores to The University of Texas at Arlington Graduate School. The minimum requirement for GRE scores varies by program:

Master of Education in Teaching (MEdT): 500 verbal, 400 quantitative
Master of Education, Curriculum & Instruction (MEd - CI): 500 verbal, 400 quantitative
Master of Education, Educational Leadership & Policy Studies (MEd - ELPS):
500 verbal, 500 quantitative, 4.0 written (2 of 3 required)

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR INITIAL TEACHER CERTIFICATION CANDIDATES:

To be certified to teach in the State of Texas candidates must first choose the grade level they wish to teach. If you choose to teach Middle Level or above you must also choose a subject you wish to teach. This is what the State refers to as your 'content area'. You must have a minimum of 24 undergraduate hours in your chosen content area and at least half of those hours must be junior/senior level classes. Your content must be verified by a professor in your discipline that is designated as a Content Advisor before you will be permitted to enroll in classes. If you have less than 24 hours in your area you may be required to take additional undergraduate coursework BEFORE you will be admitted to the Teacher Certification or MEdT program. Please print the Content Declaration Form and follow the instructions to have your content evaluated prior to submitting an application.
