CCAS Check Points
Check points in table format (PDF)
Check Point I: Admission to the COEd
- Transcripts are evaluated to insure undergraduates have a GPA of 2.75 over all or in the last 60 hours, and they have earned minimum THEA scores (270 on Reading, 230 on Math, and 220 on Writing).
- Transcripts are evaluated to insure graduate candidates have a GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours and an appropriate GRE score or Special Student Status. (The GRE is not required for non-degree seeking candidates/candidates seeking certification only; it is only required of those pursuing the complete masters.) Since the state does not allow using the GRE as a sole factor for admission, other criteria may be applied. Additionally, initial certification students were formerly admitted with a 2.75 Special Student status; however, recent approval has been gained to require all post-baccalaureate candidates to enter with a 3.0 GPA.
Check Point II: Certification Coursework
- Candidates must maintain the required GPA throughout the course of the program. GPA is monitored closely by advisors and candidates are not cleared to register for courses if they have not maintained the required GPA. The department chairs receive GPA data from the university following each semester but that was too late to be helpful in denying course registration for the following semester. Based on the need to monitor candidate GPA prior to receiving the information from the university, the unit initiated a process where instructors inform advisors of candidates earning a "C" or lower in their course during the months of November, April and August. That process has curbed candidate registration for semesters in which they have not met the GPA requirement.
- Dispositions are monitored.
- Candidates must complete the required coursework in each program before being accepted to field placements. Advisors and faculty monitor this requirement.
- Portfolio milestones provide formative evaluations of candidate performance within each program.
Check Point III: Field Experience
- Candidates must apply for entrance into their final field experience.
- Candidates are assessed on a set of Benchmarks during each program.
- Initial certification Benchmarks are aligned with state induction year expectations and are consistent across the programs.
- Advanced program candidates are assessed at the end of the required field experience using assessments similar to the Benchmarks but varying between programs
- Dispositions are monitored.
- Portfolio milestones provide formative evaluations of candidate performance within each program.
- Action Plans are produced for any candidates not meeting the expectations of the UTA faculty and/or ISD mentors or administrators. Candidates are provided specific processes and activities to lead to improvement and are monitored closely. If they are unable to make the required improvements they meet with a college committee and are either placed in a different location for further improvement or dismissed from the program and COEd.
Check Point IV: Program Completion
- Portfolio – the final milestone provides a summative evaluation of candidate performance.
- Dispositions are measured.
- Candidate TExES scores. While the state does not allow universities to require candidates to complete the state exams prior to exiting programs, candidates are strongly encouraged to do so and most candidates in the COEd successfully complete required exams prior to graduation.
-
The COEd clears a candidate for Certification when degree has been
granted and exams have been passed.
