Performance-based Assessment

The College Continuous Assessment System (CCAS) was adopted by the Teacher Education Council for implementation beginning Fall 2004. Implementation of the CCAS ensures all candidates in the Educator and Administrator Preparation unit of the College possess the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required for effectively impacting the learning of P-12 students and the environments of P-12 schools.

The CCAS established Check Points at which the qualifications and/or performance of all Educator and Administrator Preparation candidates are assessed. Those Check Points occur at admission to the College of Education, during course work, during field experiences, and at program completion.

Throughout the CCAS, each candidate is expected to meet the admission standards for GPA and THEA, GRE or other specified criteria; maintain the required GPA throughout the program; complete required coursework in specified order (when denoted); submit appropriate applications prior to the deadlines advertised; demonstrate an acceptable level of performance during field experiences; and earn passing scores on the state teacher exams (TexES). All candidates will create an electronic program portfolio, into which artifacts and Key Assessments will be entered from each course required in the program. Candidate’s electronic portfolios will be monitored at milestones and progress toward becoming an effective educator or administrator will be noted.

Dispositions (pdf) of our candidates and effective educators and administrators are important. The Educator and Administrator Preparation unit of the College of Education has identified dispositions that align with the unit’s Core Values and candidate dispositions are measured as part of the CCAS every semester in every course.

LiveText has been adopted by the Educator and Administrator Preparation unit of the College of Education as the official electronic data management system at The University of Texas at Arlington. LiveText is a web-based, comprehensive tool that allows candidates to develop lesson plans, projects, portfolios and other tasks online. An important feature of LiveText allows candidates to share work they have submitted for review by peers, faculty and P-12 mentors. Candidates who create professional portfolios within LiveText are able to share those with future employers as part of the interview process.

All candidates enrolled in Educator and Administrator Preparation courses at UTA are required to purchase LiveText for the first course and use LiveText to create the electronic program portfolio throughout their coursework. Artifacts and Key Assessments are continually added to portfolios by candidates to demonstrate mastery of the state and national standards of the program.

In addition to Check Points I-IV focused on candidate performance up to program completion, Check Point V seeks input from external sources. Input provided from partner school mentors, employers and induction year candidates is used to assess and improve programs in the Educator and Administrator Preparation unit of the College of Education at UTA.
