Important Program Notices

CONTENT: In order to be certified in the State of Texas candidates must first choose the grade level they wish to teach. If you choose Mid-Level or above you must also choose a subject you wish to teach. This is what the state refers to as your 'Content Area'. You must have a minimum of 24 undergraduate hours in your chosen content area and at least half of those hours must be junior/senior level classes. Your content must be verified by a professor in your discipline that has been designated as a Content Advisor before you will be permitted to enroll in classes. Please print the content declaration form and follow the instructions to have your content evaluated.

PRACTICUM/RESIDENCY: The last course required for certification is a practicum/residency course. This is when candidates do student teaching. Partnerships with specific school districts and schools have been established to host the College of Education Residents (student teachers). We work closely with specific schools to build strong mentoring relationships between teachers and students, and therefore place all students in partner school settings. Students are not able to select the district or school for their placement.

C & I ADD-ON ENDORSEMENTS: Many of these programs are taught completely online. In order to obtain these certificates you must first have a valid Texas teaching certificate. Other restrictions may apply depending upon the certificate being sought. Check with an advisor to determine if you qualify.

ELPS:  These programs require a minimum of 2 years classroom teaching experience.

CERTIFICATION (ALL AREAS): STUDENTS MUST pass all appropriate state exam(s) and apply for appropriate state certification with the State Board for Educator Certification/Texas Education Agency  within six months of the completion of their program. If a student allows the six month period to go by without passing all state exam(s) and applying for certification, additional coursework and/or state exams will be required for recommendation for certification. Additional coursework will be determined by the appropriate Program Director in consultation with the faculty.
